Ann and I received a pleasant surprise last week when we received a telephone call from L. B. Haws, telling us that he and Jackie would be coming to Nashville over the Labor Day weekend.
So late on Sunday morning we went up to the Opryland Hotel, picked them up and brought them to Franklin.
First we all went to lunch at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in the Cool Springs area of Franklin. The first photo you see was made by Ann just outside the restaurant.
We all had an enjoyable lunch and a great visit. The second photo was made by one of the waitresses at Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrel is one of the sponsors of the Grand Ole Opry, so it was only reasonable that these visiting Coloradoans should go to Cracker Barrel.
L. B. indicated his interest in Civil War History and in the re-enactments. So we drove him to the Carnton Mansion in Franklin, where the bodies of six Civil War Generals were laid out on a porch. One of those Generals was Helena's own Patrick Cleburne, who was killed here in the battle in 1864.
Then we went by the Carter's House, a plantation home here during the war which is a National Historic Landmark. The house and surrounding buildings are all pock marked with bullet holes from the battle.
After that, in much too short a time, I dropped Ann by our house and reluctantly returned them to their hotel.
It was a great visit.
