Harmonizing Intuition and Theory.

Jean Courtney says "everyone has intuitive colors that feel good to them". She learns how clients want to feel in a space and then creates color schemes to nurture those feelings and help them be felt more strongly.

In addition to her intuitive approach to color, Jean Courtney draws on formal color studies at the Boston Architectural Center. She uses a tool kit that includes contrasts, blends, compliments and analogous colors from primary, secondary and tertiary schemes. In other words - she knows which colors and color combinations "work" scientifically.

For example, she would avoid using blue in the Northern quadrant of a room because this "dark upon dark" usage can create melancholic emotions in occupants.

On the other hand, the Western direction supports more colors because the light is longest.

The East, with soft light, calls for softer colors - light willow greens, soft beige, camels, soft yellows. The South, a growth area, supports the use of reds, yellows and greens and is also one of the only directions that can accept blue hues.
