IKEA: Eco-friend or foe?

An assessment of the environmental conscience of the multinational home furnishings giant.

Introduction

Is this bright blue and yellow furniture store as green as it claims to be? Ikea's own code of conduct (6) states that their vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people. Does this better everyday life include the lives of future generations? What about the lives of people in the poorest countries of the world? Ikea's business ideas focus on providing well-designed, functional home furnishing products at low prices, but at what environmental and social cost?

This website was created to illustrate whether or not Ikea is making efforts to be a sustainable corporation--one that promotes social equity, emphasizes the well being of future generations, acts as a responsible steward of energy and materials, recognizes that humans are part of natural systems, and upholds values.
