Where MATH COUNTS

Chatroom

Our classroom is called the "Chatroom". We are a community of learners who learn through interaction and chat! I learn too! Maybe more than the students- it is said "to learn, you must teach". The goal for each student is to "know, understand and be able to do". Lessons are designed to do exactly that!

In order to learn, this room has rules.

      1. Be on time

      2. Be Prepared

      3. Follow all procedures

      4. Be in your seat, ready to work at the bell.

Proper posture, with your eyes and attention on the teacher, is expected. Listening and not talking during instruction, as well as taking notes, is mandatory. Finally, assignments without names and the proper heading receive no credit.

Work will be made up for absences and due in same amount of time you where absent. "Unexcused"-reduced credit. "Excused"-full credit. Late work receives a zero.

Grading Rules:

Homework-homework-10% of your final grade- everyone starts out with 100 and each missed homework is 10 points off! Miss 10 homeworks, and a 0 is the result! Turn in each day in the "in" basket when asked. Can be worth one full letter grade!

Class participation- everyone starts out with an 80 and a point system is in place to increase or decrease the grade according to posture, clean desks (above & below), note taking, asking questions, and talking without permission. Counts as an on- going Quiz grade.

Tests (& some projects) Math 8A-35% of your grade/Finals- 15%. A unit test is given at the end of each unit (no use of notes, books, or help of any kind). IA and AIA tests are 55% of the grade with a 1st Semester final and EOCT at 15% each.

Quizzes/Projects/Take Home Tests (used as a Study Guide) -20% of your grade. Usually a take home test is given out at the beginning of each unit and is due at the end of the unit (Do not lose it). Quizzes are sometimes given daily( called TOD-"ticket out the door") as one or two problems and accumulate as one quiz grade per unit.

Additional Math8A- Notebook/Journal/Math Reflections:  10%    +Class work: 10%

Seating-no assigned seating (unless necessary). We work in pairs a great deal-so sit next to a good "teacher". Learning comes from teaching!

Rebound: If you get a grade on a quiz or test you do not like, I offer you a rebound program. Come see me with the test or quiz and say you would like a “rebound”. I will either offer you a time for an oral student interview or a written reflection from which I am convinced you have learned what you did not demonstrate proficiency the first time on the test or quiz. The rebound must include the following: 1). What errors in detail you made. 2).Why you made them. 3). How you would not make the same mistake next time.

This goes way beyond reworking the problem/s. If I am convinced you now know, understand, and are able to do what you were being assessed for, I will change your grade on that assessment up to a 50% increase. As an example, if you

received a 70, you could increase that grade up to an 80!

Rebounding means learning from your mistakes and not being stuck with a low grade. Grab the rebounds!
