USS Olympia

USS Olympia was Admiral Dewey's flagship at Manilla Bay. She is the only early steam warship that I know of in the US, with the exception of the Monitor (which is currently in pieces at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA). between the sail Navy represented by the frigate Constellation from the 1850s, and the "modern" naval vessels on display around the country. I visited her at her berth in Philadelphia in 2006. Across the Delaware River and easily visible from her deck is the WW2 battleship USS New Jersey, which represents the culmination of large gun warship development.

Large naval vessels have machine shops on board. This is a Putnam sliding gap-bed lathe. Space did not allow me to get the entire lathe in one photo.
Drill press.
This is an ash-hoist engine, used to bring ash from the boilers to the main deck, where it was dumped overboard through ash chutes.
