Sophenia Ish

Sophenia Ish was born near Umatilla, Oregon in 1864. Her mother, Ann (King) Ish died of cancer in the Fall of 1872 and Sophenia was taken to Jacksonville, Oregon to live with her Aunt Jane Eleanor (Jones) Ish "Ellen" and Uncle Jacob Ish. Ellen and Jacob had a daughter of their own named Sophenia Jane Ish and both girls were born in 1864. Both girls were named after their paternal Grandmother, Sophenia (Rust) Ish. When Ellen also became ill with cancer in 1878, Ellen's sister, Sarah Elizabeth Jones "Sallie", decided to sail from Virginia traveling around the Horn to the West Coast and then by land to Jacksonville, Oregon to help take care of her sister, Ellen. Sallie had been taking care of her brother, Robert Jones, but he had passed away in the Spring of 1878. This had left Aunt Sallie free to come West. Ellen died before Sallie arrived. Aunt Sallie remained at the Ish Ranch to take care of Sophenia Ish and cousin, Sophenia Jane Ish. In 1879, she and Jacob Ish were married.

Sophenia Ish lived at the Ish Ranch until she married Henry Edward Baker in 1888. The wedding took place at the Ish Ranch. Approximately fifty acres of land was deeded to Sophenia by Aunt Sallie and a home was built for her at 902 West McAndrews Road in Medford.

Henry and Sophenia had four sons between 1890 and 1899 but there were problems with the marriage and Henry eventually moved out of the Baker home in Medford leaving Sophenia to raise their boys alone.

Sophenia died in 1945 in Medford, Oregon.
