Chris Mule's MiM Mission Statement

Tuesday, September 28, 2004

Here's what we played on September 21

Lemonheads - It's a Shame About Ray, Jenny, yes apparently they're from Boston

Me'shell Ndegeocello - Step Into the Projects, Sergio, not a trace of John (Cougar) Melloncamp to be found

Victor Vaughn - Saliva, Ken

Suicide - Frankie Teardrop, Jerad, a pleasant ditty about murder, suicide, and going to hell

Norah Jones - Humble Me, Frank, kinda the opposite of "Frankie Teardrop"

Tricky - Pumpkin, Brian

The Waitresses - Ken, probably Sergio's new favorite band

The Cure - The Blood, Sergio

As people left Sergio and I got everyone very excited for the next MiM by reminding everyone that we're going to see Morrissey the night before that. However, you might not have much to worry about; R.E.M.'s Around the Sun comes out the day of the next MiM so I'll be suitably obsessed in that direction.

What's on?

It's been way too long since there's been a post. Sorry. Really. This doesn't quite make up for a month+ of quiet, but here's what currently on the ol' hi-fi (aka the "nothing else to post" post).
Mission of Burma - ONoffON
The Smiths - This Charming Man single & lots else (thanks Sergio)
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlantacism
Spiritualized - Amazing Grace
Divine Comedy - all of their stuff. They rule, like a proper witty well-dressed British guy does.
Bjork - Medulla

Mass on the Grass

Tuesday night we brought the rock to Cambridge and had Mass in Music on the lawn behind the Charles Hotel next to Memorial Drive. Susan brought her ghetto blaster, we rolled out the blanket, and heard such fine tunes as:

"Still in Love Song" - The Stills (Jerad), which was followed by a discussion of how young/old you have to be to be considered "Gen X." The Wikipedia definition doesn't seem to resolve this at all.

"12XU" - Wire (Jerad), pronounced "One-Two-Ex-You"

"Three Girl Rhumba" - Wire (again Jerad), we played an extra Wire song because Sergio wanted to hear just how much Elastica had ripped off this song for their hit "Connection." The answer is incredibly much.

Mark Eitzel radio show on WFMU (Ken), we heard some witty banter, a live song, and someone cracking wise at Mark which will inevitably ruin the rest of the show.

"Creature in the Classroom" - Passage (Brian), so sub-human, man.

"The Suits are Picking Up the Bill" - Squirrel Nut Zippers (Susan), somehow we didn't end up swing dancing all over the lawn.

"Sunshine and Love" - Happy Mondays (Sergio), again, no dancing, although Sergio admitted to choosing this song because it's the one he dance the most to whilst waiting for Ken to pick him up.

"Suffer Little Children" - The Smiths (Sergio), more Wikipedia definitions so that us Yankees can fulfully understand what Morrisey is talking about. This was the only one of the 20 or so Smiths/Morrisey CDs that Sergio brought that we played. Ken was pretty pissed off about not getting to hear "This Charming Man." I know that there should be some clever way that I can work "Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before" into the post.

"Slow Hands" - Interpol (Jerad), I had to get this one last one played. It's their new single, and it's damn catchy. I've recently become a sucker for the Four on the Floor.

Tonight's Mass in Music playlist

We had a small turnout tonight, but had quite a lively discussion about all sorts of music. What did we play? Well...

Sergio - The Decemberists "Los Angeles I'm Yours" - an interesting mix of instruments and nasal vocals from the Pacific NW who sound somewhat like the next band...

Brian - Neutral Milk Hotel "Holland 1945" - He's played stuff from this album before, but it's still one of the top records of the 90s, and Brian was there from the very beginning.

Jerad - Franz Ferdinand "Darts of Pleasure" - I've already talked about them in a post a couple of weeks ago. They're still brilliant and really leave me dead chuffed.

New AllMusic

I just noticed that the All Music Guide site has been updated. It's a bit easier to navigate through the artist pages (more tabs, less scrolling), and there's also some strange multi-legged spinning thing at the top of the page so that you can search for all artists who play the harp, or something like that. It's worth a few minutes of your time in the middle of a busy day.

Play!

Somerville's annual ArtBeat is being held this weekend, July 16th and 17th in Davis Square. I probably can't do a better job of describing it than their own website can, so I've just stolen this text.

This year's ArtBeat theme is "Play." We'll be exploring how people and community come together when they are playful, creative, and expressive. There will be interactive comix, chess playing, a "Playmation" film fest, a Somerville-themed game show, youth Brazilian drum playing and local writers participating in "WordPlay." In conjuction with ArtBeat, the Nave Gallery presents "Play", featuring nine Boston area artists; curated by ARTSomerville.

You can see the full lineup and schedule here. The fun starts tonight around 6pm and goes through most of the day tomorrow.

"I can feel my lips undress your eyes"

Those who were at Burton and Jen's MiM a few months ago might remember me saying that I've felt like I've been in a rut with finding new music that really excites me lately. Maybe you don't remember. The point is that I said it. Well, soon after that Tuesday I picked up one of Newbury Comics' low-priced new CDs by a new Scottish group, Franz Ferdinand. It was cheap, I had heard some good things in the British press, so I didn't think I had anything to lose. As you might expect, the next thing I'm going to say is that FF is one of the most exciting new bands I've heard in a very long time. My British music bias probably plays a big role in my preference, but they are a really great band. They sound like a poppy Blur with Pulp's sleaze and some Pixies guitar work. On top of that, the lyrics (the title of this post is from "Darts of Pleasure") are interesting and fun to listen to; they aren't afterthoughts to the music. Unfortunately, I missed FF playing in Boston while I was in Hawaii, but I've heard from some friends that their live show is just as exciting as the record. So, if you want to find some good new tunes, I'd recommend FF to anybody who will listen to me. You can probably still get it for pretty cheap at Newbury Comics. I just hope now that I can find some other new music that can wow me like this album has. A scene has to start with someone.

Curiosa

Lollapalooza is gone, but there's another festival coming to town this summer that will probably be worth seeing. That merry band of minstrels, The Cure have put together their own travelling festival of sound called Curiosa. The Cure themselves will be headlining, with Interpol, The Rapture, and Mogwai joining them on the main stage. The second stage will feature a rotating cast of bands including Muse, Auf Der Maur, The Cooper Temple Clause, Head Automatica, Cursive, Thursday, and Scarling.

So, where can I see this collection of happy sunshine-inducing bands? They'll be trucking through the Tweeter Center in Mansfield on Saturday, August 7th, which is the night before some of my best friends' wedding. Stupid friends.

Quiet lately...

So I'm back from my Hawaiian vacation, and I was able to avoid any dangerous tiki statue curses. I imagine that there are at least a few things that I should try to catch up on here on the blog. I guess the most significant piece of music news that I've heard lately is that Lollapalooza has been cancelled this year. That means that most of the bands on that incredible lineup, including Flaming Lips, Morrissey, the Pixies, and PJ Harvey are now without a summer tour. I'm sure that Mozzer just tossed his head and made a quip about the ungrateful Yankees, but I sure hope that at least a few of these other bands find a way to get out on the road. At press time, at least Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth have started to schedule some make-up dates.

On the subject of Mass in Music, I think that July would be a lovely time to start things up again. If anyone reading this (does anyone read this) is interested in hosting a group of music junkies, just let me know and I'll pencil you into my trusty PDA. Or something like that.

Finally, I spent some time reading Pitchfork's Best Albums of the 70's list this weekend, and then promptly made a list of some albums that I really should have. So far I've found Wire's Pink Flag and Big Star's two albums that matter on one CD. It's great to finally hear what all of the Elastica-is-a-Wire-ripoff noise was about; it's completely true, but they did it so well, and Justine Frischmann...well, she's just Justine...
