Tonight's Mass in Music playlist
We had a small turnout tonight, but had quite a lively discussion about all sorts of music. What did we play? Well...
Sergio - The Decemberists "Los Angeles I'm Yours" - an interesting mix of instruments and nasal vocals from the Pacific NW who sound somewhat like the next band...
Brian - Neutral Milk Hotel "Holland 1945" - He's played stuff from this album before, but it's still one of the top records of the 90s, and Brian was there from the very beginning.
Jerad - Franz Ferdinand "Darts of Pleasure" - I've already talked about them in a post a couple of weeks ago. They're still brilliant and really leave me dead chuffed.

New AllMusic
I just noticed that the All Music Guide site has been updated. It's a bit easier to navigate through the artist pages (more tabs, less scrolling), and there's also some strange multi-legged spinning thing at the top of the page so that you can search for all artists who play the harp, or something like that. It's worth a few minutes of your time in the middle of a busy day.

Play!
Somerville's annual ArtBeat is being held this weekend, July 16th and 17th in Davis Square. I probably can't do a better job of describing it than their own website can, so I've just stolen this text.
This year's ArtBeat theme is "Play." We'll be exploring how people and community come together when they are playful, creative, and expressive. There will be interactive comix, chess playing, a "Playmation" film fest, a Somerville-themed game show, youth Brazilian drum playing and local writers participating in "WordPlay." In conjuction with ArtBeat, the Nave Gallery presents "Play", featuring nine Boston area artists; curated by ARTSomerville.
You can see the full lineup and schedule here. The fun starts tonight around 6pm and goes through most of the day tomorrow.

"I can feel my lips undress your eyes"
Those who were at Burton and Jen's MiM a few months ago might remember me saying that I've felt like I've been in a rut with finding new music that really excites me lately. Maybe you don't remember. The point is that I said it. Well, soon after that Tuesday I picked up one of Newbury Comics' low-priced new CDs by a new Scottish group, Franz Ferdinand. It was cheap, I had heard some good things in the British press, so I didn't think I had anything to lose. As you might expect, the next thing I'm going to say is that FF is one of the most exciting new bands I've heard in a very long time. My British music bias probably plays a big role in my preference, but they are a really great band. They sound like a poppy Blur with Pulp's sleaze and some Pixies guitar work. On top of that, the lyrics (the title of this post is from "Darts of Pleasure") are interesting and fun to listen to; they aren't afterthoughts to the music. Unfortunately, I missed FF playing in Boston while I was in Hawaii, but I've heard from some friends that their live show is just as exciting as the record. So, if you want to find some good new tunes, I'd recommend FF to anybody who will listen to me. You can probably still get it for pretty cheap at Newbury Comics. I just hope now that I can find some other new music that can wow me like this album has. A scene has to start with someone.

Curiosa
Lollapalooza is gone, but there's another festival coming to town this summer that will probably be worth seeing. That merry band of minstrels, The Cure have put together their own travelling festival of sound called Curiosa. The Cure themselves will be headlining, with Interpol, The Rapture, and Mogwai joining them on the main stage. The second stage will feature a rotating cast of bands including Muse, Auf Der Maur, The Cooper Temple Clause, Head Automatica, Cursive, Thursday, and Scarling.
So, where can I see this collection of happy sunshine-inducing bands? They'll be trucking through the Tweeter Center in Mansfield on Saturday, August 7th, which is the night before some of my best friends' wedding. Stupid friends.
