Freight Capsule
in Orbit
Cliff Leyland has emerged from the air lock in an emergency deep-space
suit. He holds onto a hand rail while positioning himself for the all-important
jump.
The freight capsule consists of cuboctahedral frames. The rear module
has a compartment for a human passenger and miscellaneous small cargo.
The forward compartments contain spherical fuel tanks for holding liquid
oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The capsule's intended destination was the
L1 Gateway Space Station, where it will be used to fuel the station and
interplanetary missions.
When the capsule is captured by the space station, the capsule self-disassembles,
as each module is a semi-autonomous robot. Each module attaches itself
to the station via the robot clamps at each point of it's frame. These
clamps can swing the entire module towards the nearest clamp on it's host
module. Using this strategy, each module can "roll" towards it's intended
destination on the station through successive engaging, rotating, and dis-engaging
each hydraulic clamp "monkey grip" fashion.
