In
February 1983, Space Fanzine Yamato came into being as a 44-page
digest-size publication. Its stated goal was to become "a sourcebook for
fans of both Star Blazers and Space Cruiser Yamato." This first issue covered topics ranging from first series character data, to song lyrics, to lists of model kits. It even included the very first printing of an English-translation Yamato cutaway blueprint that would subsequently be utilized for posters and T-shirts produced by other concerns. Based on feedback from people who purchased it, SFY was considered unique in it's content, style, and then unusual high quality of publishing.
At the time of first release, it was hoped that SFY would continue for many issues, each focused on a particular segment of the series with other useful data thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately many variables, not the least of which were time and money, prevented additional issues from being produced. After two 100-copy runs, and a sanctioned "bootleg" run by the EDC, SFY issue 1 appeared to be all anyone would ever see.
As desktop publishing became affordable to individuals, discussions occasionally arose about reviving SFY. Many ideas and options were tossed around, but no serious work ever developed until now. With the use of the World Wide Web now firmly entrenched, and many other fans publishing Yamato and other anime pages, it seemed an opportune time to redevelop the SFY concept into Space Webzine Yamato.
And so it begins anew... we hope you enjoy it and find it worthwhile.
(Hey... wasn't there supposed to be a Volume 2?)
