Lighting Update
This is what the lights look like looking down the peninsula and back to the end. I took these at an angle to show the lights. They do show up in normal viewing angles so I will eventually have to lower the valance enough to block them. There is no problem along the long or front walls.
This is front scene area under the new lights. It's a little darker at the rear of the scene but fortunately the trains appear only in the foreground here and disappear at the back of the scene. There will be no lighting in the aisles: there is enough spillover from the layout and it draws one's attention to the layout very effectively. Actually, I have one florescent fixture near the front door for room lighting but this will be off for operating. I will be putting dimmers on the circuits controlling the lights.
