Mandarin Chinese 1 is an elementary course that is designed for students who have no formal background in learning Chinese. It introduces the Chinese (Mandarin) Pinyin system, basic grammatical structures and functional daily use. It covers approximately 200 characters and associated phrases. It emphasizes the training of all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing), calligraphy, as well as understanding of the socio-linguistics and the socio-cultural factors that are necessary for cross-cultural communication. The program includes a variety of accompanying resources (workbooks, CD audio, videos, on-line instruction, transparencies, and assessments) to support various learning approaches.

This is a two-semester, one credit course.

Participation grade includes but is not limited to the following elements:

  • Teacher observation
  • Self-evaluation
  • Oral presentation
  • Written report
  • Material preparation
  • Group project involvement

In this course, students are expected to have time management skills, organization ability, respect, creativity, and most importantly, responsibilities.
