Building The T&SF
Valance (no, not Richie)

Site Map

April 2002

I've begun the process of valance, backdrop and fascia installation. The valence provides complete overhead coverage to control dust (important in a garage…) and will also contain incandescent lighting. It is constructed from 2x4's mounted on inverted heavy duty shelf supports at 32" to 36" on center, each good for 100 lbs (overkill but better safe than sorry) to which a continuous 2x2 is mounted above the face of the layout. 1/8" masonite is attached to the underside of the framing to form the "lid" and also to the face of the framing to form the 10" high valence. Here's a photo of the work in progress (still needs to be painted T&SF Green). The underside of the lid and back of the valence are painted white for good light reflectance. The next step is to install the lighting and the backdrop.
