About Tom Tom du Monde Tom Tom du Monde is a music education program created by François Lareuse in order to introduce to and allow students to perform a variety of musical genres that represent the cultural diversity of our world. During a performance, the audience travels to the seven continents of the globe and participates in an audio-visual, multi-media event with colorful masks, seven foot theatrical backdrops, and several exotic instruments from around the world. Music has no boundaries and is referred to as the universal language that all cultures share as a necessary balance between them. Jazz manouche, musette swing, African rhumba, musique tzigaine, and the bal populaire are just a few of the types of music that students are introduced to and participate in during the event. The troupe Tom Tom du Monde have been viewed as ambassadors of world music. Tom Tom du Monde is a truly authentic experience full of pure raw energy.
Tom Tom du Monde is a DC area trio consisting of Greg Burns (percussion), François Lareuse (guitar), and Chauncey Canfield (keyboards). Defying easy categorization, the group keeps improvisation central to their sound. Listeners will hear elements of standard and modern jazz, blues, Brazilian, French folk music, Afro-Cuban, Parisian Hot Club Swing, and New Orleans Funk throughout their sets. This is a reflection of the group's diverse tastes and artistic influences. Their versatility is evident in the interpretations, as mood and inspiration dictates. Audiences often remark about the musical chemistry between the members, noting how well the elements are combined while continuing to maintain their individual identities.
