In their own words
When did you start racing, and why?
When I was a kid growing up in Minneapolis I lived on the tough side of town. The Artist (Prince) lived next door and would always kick my ass after school. I guess I bought my first bike to outrun him on my way home each day. I got into pretty good shape and decided to try a race. It was sunny and 90 degrees at the start and 40 degrees and raining for the last two laps of the 45 minute race. I trained specifically for this 15 mile race and I was more nervous in the days leading up to the start than I had probably ever been trying to out run Prince. I was nervous because so many things could go wrong in a 15 mile race, which included 15 miles of rough roads. I knew I prepared physically, but I also knew I would need lots of luck. That day, everything went exactly as I had planned and envisioned it would.
Who were/are your cycling mentors and/or influences?
Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Joop Zoetmilk, those guys would still be great riders in todays fields, if they weren't so old.
What was your first win?
My first win was a hilly training Crit in Waukesha WI, I was only 13 and I lapped the Pro field twice. No, wait a minute...that wasn't me. I won a race when I was 22 but then got "disqualified" for a "blocking violation."
What do you consider your strengths as a cyclist?
My power is very useful in events which contain large amounts of pedaling, I do well on the pedalers courses. Also, I find that my many years of experience are extremely beneficial.
What do you consider your strengths off the bike?
My hair and abs, I have great abs because I do 1000 crunches each morning. I have a very complete shoe collection as well, I really love nice shoes. In my closet are, neatly organised by color, one hundred and twelve pairs of shoes. My acting resume is starting to fill up too. I did a bunch of commercials back when I was living in LA, a few bit parts on The New Mike Hammer and Baywatch. More recently I appeared on The Real World Detroit '97 and Survivor Haiti.
What would you consider your finest moment on the bike?
The year I almost won nationals. It was held in Indiana in 1986. The weather was hot and muggy and the racing was even hotter. It came down to a photo-finish but we didn't use cameras at the line in those days. I may have won, it depends on who you ask.
What would you consider your worst or most embarrassing moment on the bike?
Anytime that I have crapped my pants during a race. It's ugly and difficult to clean up in the parking lot after the race.
When you're not on your bike, what do you like to do?
Bake, organize my CD's, organize my shoes, clean the microwave (messy roomate). I attend performing arts classes at the University of Boulder during the winter months. When I'm done racing I will pursue acting full time, maybe someone reading this can help me out ;-)
What are your favorite movies?
Anything
by
Woody Allen, Lord of the Rings, The Horse Whisperer. I used to be into
Akira Kurasawa but he is so 2003, now my favorite director is Ed Wood.
And, by the way, I loved Johhny Depp in the movie about Ed Wood's life.
What about your favorite musical artists?
Pretty much everything, I love all music...U2, REM, The Smiths, PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, I hate most Country,Rap, and Hip Hop though.
How would you describe your sense of humor?
Dry
and
sarcastic, most people don't think I'm funny but I have a great since
of humor, it's just dry humor like Seinfeld.
What are your favorite foods, besides pasta?
