Five Miles From Times Square

Try telling anyone standing in the epicenter of commercial culture's holiest shrine that they're 15 minutes drive from a wilderness.

It's true that just a few miles from New York City's Times Square there's a vast, living ecosystem that refuses to submit to the forces of supply and demand in the hottest real estate market this side of the Prime Meridian. But who cares? Isn't Jimmy Hoffa buried there? And what's with that smell?

The smell comes from a little urban wilderness called The Meadowlands in New Jersey on a planet called Earth, which is a tiny little oasis in a cold, dark universe that happens to be heaven for all of the living things we know. Every day, more and more of the Earth is carved up, sub-divided and "improved" for the purposes of commercial ventures. What makes The Meadowlands so unique is that it is almost dead centered in a particular part of the Earth where demand for improvement is extremely high, yet a large portion of it remains intact, and its economic potential unexploited.

The ability of The Meadowlands to survive in such a place is a lesson for us all that sometimes Nature gets what it wants, not because it's evil, but because it's designed that way. In spite of breathable air and abundant water, the Earth can be an extremely inhospitable place for anything made that doesn't include a contingency plan for erosion and decay (i.e., a bridge as opposed to a bird's nest).

Five Miles From Times Square will be an exhibition of paintings that will examine this lesson and study this unlikely survival story. It will begin with a series of adventures into a spectacular urban wilderness and end with breathtaking images that will intrigue, entertain, and inspire.
