All of the butterflies for each month were photographed at Sunol-Ohlone Regional Wilderness, a 7,000-acre preserve in Alameda County, California, where Marilyn volunteered as a docent for 13 years. During that time, she took part in a resource inventory survey and logged voucher photos of 45 species. Her goal was to document the life cycle stages of each of the species. The featured butterfly and the photos for each month were selected by her. She wrote the associated text.
Marilyn's project of creating additional monthly web pages on butterflies was postponed when her focus shifted to her first granddaughter and a subsequent second granddaughter. She did however continue to survey and photograph the butterflies of Sunol up until the time that her illness prevented such activities in December of 1999.
