I was still "MD Joe" when I shot my hawg

I really enjoyed my experience! Our guide Doug told Bob and I to work through a draw about 300 yards, and that he'd meet us on the other side. I kicked up a feral pig at the bottom that ran Bob's way. I yelled to Bob that it was coming. When I got to the firetrail on the other side, I dang sure knew I didn't travel much over 100 yards, much less the 300 I was expecting.

I leaned against a tree to wait a bit, when I saw a group of 8 russians going through the bottom that I just came out of ! I sized up the situation and decided to run in at an angle to cut them off. They stopped and looked back at me and I froze, relying on their reputed bad eyesight. The stare-down lasted about a full minute ( a long nervous minute ) before they took off again, and I picked up the chase. Twice more they stopped and stared my way, hearing me running in the leaves after them.

At one point, they cut a U-turn and headed right back down the draw we just came up. I chose to peel away from them, I got on the firetrail and sprinted down to get ahead of them. I was quieter on the firetrail, and I could keep track of them by their noise in the leaves. A few times I could barely spot the tops of their backs just over the hill.

Finally, they stopped again, all of them grouped and broadside. I was still on the firetrail, I nocked an arrow, and started walking toward them. The whole time looking for a shooting lane. I finally saw a boar standing in a lane, drew and picked a spot.

From 15 yards I layed my arrow low and behind his shoulder, perfect! Man, it ALL broke loose ! The boar squealed and the group split up and ran. Madness! I was back-peddling and trying to keep track of all the boars. Then, my boar fell about 15 yards away and stayed down.

I was pumped ! My arms were thrust in the air, and I was prancing up and down the firetrail. I mean I was pumped ! At that point I was still alone, no dogs, no guide, no buddies. The total chase probably covered at least 300 yards. I was thrilled the way I got my first boar !

MikeW walks in for the shot. You can't see it in the glare, but the pig is in a mud hole on the far right of the picture. After 2 uneventful misses, the pig took off. Mike swung on him and made a nice running shot.

Lex's Jak Hammer's did the job again

No sooner did we step out of the truck after lunch, then the dogs started bawling! We ran to them and saw 2 boar at the top of the ridge. The dogs were holding the boar and Bob had time. His first shot was a little high, but hawg didn't even flinch on the first shot. Not an ear, not a hair, I mean nothing ! He didn't flinch ! After Bob hit him with a second arrow, the boar took off and the dogs way-layed him at the bottom of a waterfall.

Bob's first boar turns out to be a pretty jet black hawg

We were admiring Bob's hawg and taking pictures, when we saw another group following 2 boar down the hill. It turns out that it was Mutt's turn. I started following Mutt with Spiderman's digital camera, clicking pictures over his shoulder. Poor Mutt, LOL, he's just not used to them small hills. ;-) Gasping for breath, he chased them down into the bottom where we were, and up the next hill. We ran around to cut them off, and the inconsiderate pigs ran back the other way again, back where they came from. Finally, Mutt (and the mutts) had the boar held up in a creek. Mutt had time to lay 3 good shots on him, but that bad boy would not go down. Finally, Mutt (with a capital M ) prevailed.

Once again, there wasn't much time to celebrate and it was Jeff's turn. This big Sherman tank took us all on a chase. Across one draw, up and over into another. Again, I tried to stay behind Jeff with the digital camera. The boar decided to hold his ground. Likewise Jeff tried to hold his... thus the OSS will live in infamy. I realized I was too danged close to some heated action, so I headed up a tree. Belfundi got most of it on video, until the video went haywire as he headed for safer ground himself. Out of the corner of my eye I saw everybody else scattering in all directions. The boar chased Jeff around a tree 3 TIMES! Man, you had to see it to believe it. I'll never forget the look in Jeff's eyes when he was looking for an escape, only to see all the good climbing trees taken. LOL! Finally, from behind a tree he was able to reach out and put the final shot on the boar.

Man, I felt special ! ...I got to take his picture, give him all of my water AND drag his hawg up the hill to the truck ;-)

Check out my Hawg Hickey !

Remember the tree I climbed? Well, I should have stayed up there longer. At one point the action calmed down just enough that I thought it was safe, and jumped down to get out of there. At the very moment that I let go of the tree, the boar started bolting after the dog ...that just happened to be directly under me! I hit the ground running! Well, I TRIED to run but slipped in some mud. LOL, I remember thinking as I fell, how mad Spiderman was going to be when I slammed his digital camera in the mud. Concern for the camera quickly gave way to concern from myself, and I was braced for what I was about to receive. When I hit the groud, I looked to my right and the boar passed me at about 5 feet ...with the dog between us, keeping it away. Man, I meant to kiss that dog but never got around to it. I got up and ran away, not knowing why Kate was looking at me seemingly concerned about something. I mean, it was over and I was fine. I didn't know yet about my "Hawg Hickey" that she saw.

I'm not sure exactly how or when I got it. Nor do I care ...ain't it a beaut !

Alphabet Jerry took this beautiful shag carpet home. The last I heard, it was still soaking in a tub full of Wool-Lite
