Through her headphones, Sara hears the hiss of ambient noise, her own breathing, and
occasionally a disembodied voice. Sara Estep is founder of the American Association: Electronic
Voice Phenomena; a world wide network of researchers recording voices of the dead. Only
new, factory sealed audio cassettes are used. The ghostly voices are never audible during the
recording process, only afterward.
Sara makes many of her EVP recordings at home in Maryland, but has discovered her best recordings
are often made while ON LOCATION. She often visits the Westminster Church and Burying Ground in
Baltimore perhaps America's oldest cemetery. Edgar Allen Poe is buried there along with his
wife, Virginia. Beneath the church, in the dank catacombs, Sara has recorded many voices --
even conversations.
Sara believes she is a modern medium through which souls of the dead can communicate with the
living. Is Sara actually recording the voices of the dead or something else even more mysterious.
Answer: UNKNOWN.
Sara Estep believes she has tape recorded the voices of the dead. Her technique is simple:
insert tape, press record, let the tape run to the end then rewind and play it back. The
results are astounding.
