Hernan Cattaneo - Metro Dance 95.1 (February 10th, 2007)

I've been listening to Hernan Cattaneo's weekly radio show lately, and I've got to say that this week's show is the strongest I've heard yet. Here's the track list:

Part 1
  1. Chymera - Midnight At The Aquarium (Original) (Mezzotinto Records)
  2. Chris Girard - Rideau Street (Hugo Gerritse Mix) (Tilth Music)
  3. Chris Girard - Rideau Street (Original) (Tilth Music)
  4. Unknown - Feedback From The City (Neil & Nick Muir Mix)
  5. Mijk van Dijk - Weil Du Bist Wie Du Bist (Blu Fin)
  6. Dark Cabin - Thought It Was Madness (Original)
  7. Gui Boratto - Atol 2007
  8. X Green - Least Expected (Caedmon Records)
Part 2
  1. Jay Lumen vs. Tobias Hoppe - Urban Nights (Original Mix) (Pure Substance Records)
  2. Jay Lumen vs. Tobias Hoppe - Siq (Original Mix) (Pure Substance Records)
  3. Jay Lumen vs. Tobias Hoppe - One Moment (A Dawn On The Beach Mix) (Pure Substance Records)
  4. Gui Boratto - Gate 7 (K2/Kompakt)
  5. Manuel Sofia aka MOS - Eternal
  6. Mr. Rogers - Harmonic Disfunction (Facu Cruz Mix) (Unsigned)
  7. Tim Davison - Spark
The mix contains Hernan's usual assortment of deep, sometimes-electro-tinged house, but the real highlights are the more straight forward progressive tunes he played. Ever since hearing Dousk's "Acrobatics" a couple of months ago, I've started re-appreciating that deep, melodic sound from a couple years back.

Part 1 starts off well with Chymera's playful "Midnight At The Aquarium," though Hernan doesn't wait long to start unloading the real grooves. Chris Girard's "Rideau Street" is deep prog as its most sublime. The Hugo Gerritse mix in particular is just ridiculously smooth. An excellent new remix from Neil and Nick Muir (Nick of Bedrock fame) leads us into the break, after which Hernan starts playing some more techy stuff. I dug Mijk van Dijk "Weil Du Bist Wie Du Bist", which is one of those cool new minimal-trance tunes that seem to be coming out every other week as of late. Also, Gui Boratto's "Atol 2007" is a very fitting minimal update to last year's gorgeous original. The mix finishes out with the toe-tapping goodness that is "Least Expected" by X Green. 55 minutes, and not a weak track to be found.

The three Jay Lumen vs. Tobias Hoppe tracks at the beginning of Part 2 were all highlights for me, especially "One Moment" with it's deep, tribal groove and atmospheric melody. All three tracks come from the excellent 6-track Hungary vs. Germany Substance EP on Pure Substance Records (available on Beatport). Elsewhere, Manuel Sofia's "Eternal" features a wonderful, plucking melody laid over a warping tech-house groove. Very nice, and an overall very strong show for Mr. Cattaneo.
