Sailing in the Sea of Cortez on a roomy catamaran
Sailing Jan 6-10 heading north from Cabo San Lucas, in the beautiful, calm
waters of the Sea of Cortez, towards Loreto, and then
the week of 11-18 heading back south. I have done two different week long trips
like this -- and let me tell you, THEY ARE A BLAST! I am not a sailor, so you
really do not need to know anything about sailing, just be ready to have fun.
ABOUT THE BOAT
Jangada is a 42' Fountain Pajot Venezia catamaran. It has 4 cabins, each
accommodating 2 persons, and two heads, each with their own shower.
It is powered by twin diesel engines with enough fuel for approximately
350 miles of cruising at 6 knots. Also on board is a watermaker
(makes 80 gallons a day), hot water heater, propane BBQ, and solar panels
providing battery charging for 110v AC power. You can see photos and the
layout at www.bayacht.com/fp42.htm.
A catamaran offers an enormous amount of cockpit, salon and deck space
so that you never feel cramped. The galley has a large stove,
refrigerator/freezer, double sink and all kitchen paraphernalia for eight
people. The sailing is generally easy, safe and fun due to the fact
that a cat will not heel over - everything stays flat as we fly along
the water! We have a big spinnaker for downwind cruising; Jangada
will easily make 12 knots on a reach and we've had her up to 18 knots
(20mph)!
Toys on board include an 11' Zodiac with 20hp outboard, wakeboard,
windsurfing, fishing, rock climbing and snorkeling gear, a 2-person
inflatable kayak, and a 'Brownie' dive-ring/compressor which enables
two people to descend up to 40'. We have a killer stereo (bring some
favorite CDs along) and a DVD player (we'll be singing along to the
Sound of Music to be sure!). There is some spare snorkeling gear
and even a solar hot tub!
Cost, expenses, and other details
This is a great deal! {Roughly $300 for the week} Everyone on board will chip
in with chores, from cooking and cleaning to provisioning, and helping with sailing the boat.
It's fun, easy and generally humorous. {That is what helps make it so inexpensive}
Everyone shares in all the boat expenses including food, fuel, moorage,
check-in fees, fishing licenses and other bureaucratic fees.
Past trips have averaged around $300/person/week, plus airfare (depending on the number
of people on board).
We have two deep-sea fishing rigs on board meaning lots of fresh fish!
Unfortunately, everyone on board needs to buy a Mexican fishing license ($42),
whether you are fishing or not.
So you could plan on getting to Loretto on the 10th, begin back to La Paz
around the 18th. You can fly in/out of either La Paz or Cabo. Either fly or bus to Loreto.

pass this on to other people that might be fun to have on this trip.
