Seeing what interest there is in a 4 day weekend trip down to the Sea of Cortez, kayaking off the east coast of the Baja.
Let me know if you have any interest as we are trying to put together a group of about 5-8 people. Expecting people from Washington, California, and Oregon to join us.
Plan is to go a four day weekend. {This seems to be the best ballace between those that want to go for a week, and those that have little to no vacation time to take off from work.}
LOCATION: On Baja's eastern coast, on the Sea of Cortez, about 350 miles south of
the border you will find the little town of "Bahia de Los Angeles", and the bay
bearing the same name, in English meaning - The Bay of Angels.
15 islands clustered in the protected waters of the bay, and off the beaten tourist
path, offer the security of unexposed crossings; none of the islands are more than
four miles from each other, making the Bay of Angels an absolute kayaker’s paradise.
More than 50 species of marine birds including Blue Footed Boobies, Frigate birds,
Ospreys, and Brown pelicans inhabit the islands, and the blue waters of the Sea
of Cortez is home to more than a dozen species of whales including the Finback
and the Blue whale the largest animal on Earth.
These islands are an isolated archipelago having one of the most nutrient-rich marine environments in the world. Why? Because From the Bay of Angels across the Sea of Cortez, islands form a natural barrier against the tidal flow, gently up-welling and mixing the plankton-rich sea floor. Plankton is the food base for little fish & crustaceans which in turn is food for bigger fish and so on. The result is a perfect ecological chain of sea life.
TRIP DESCRIPTION: Spend 4
days paddling from island to island, exploring hidden coves and taking lunch breaks
on remote beaches; with a little luck we may encounter some of the whales living
in the bay (maybe even a Blue whale) a pod of dolphins or the playful sea lions.
We will do most of the paddling in the morning and leave the afternoon for snorkeling,
hiking the island's short trails, or just relaxing.
Each night we will set our tents on a different island and camp under a warm-starry-sky.
If you have dreamed of a paddling paradise, the Bay of Angels is the place for you.
GETTING THERE: Your journey begins in San Diego-USA, the gateway to Baja California, and features great site seeing en-route to the Bay of Angels. No international flight from the U.S. to Baja is needed; Getting to the Bay of Angels requires self-transportation. You can rent a car from the San Diego airport or drive your own. A mid-size car rents for about $250/week at the San Diego airport, making the Bay of Angels our most cost-effective expedition, especially if your party is of two or more people. The Bay Of Angels trip runs from Sunday to Friday, so you only need five days off from work. Each year more adventurers realize how easy it is to drive to this little hideaway. You can leave San Diego in the morning and arrive in Bahia de Los Angeles that afternoon; Or, if you want to take your time and enjoy the scenic drive, give yourself an extra day. Where will I leave my car while I'm away on the trip? The vehicles will be parked at the private hotel where you will spend first and last night, and will be absolutely safe. How are the roads in Baja? The NAFTA agreement brought drastic improvements to tourism and traveling conditions in Baja: "A midsize sedan is well suited for the Hwy Mex 1. The road is in very good condition, paved all the way to Cabo San Lucas, and it’s virtually impossible to get lost." - THE NEW YORK TIMES - Mar. 29th, 1998.
