Sept 7 - 9, 2007 -- Motor Boat and Sail on 2-3 boats over to Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles

.....Kayakdbl.JPG (32K)

This is another one of those opportunites of a lifetime, one that can not be passed up. This is the classic sail and motor boat trip, and/or hiking trip in the Channel Islands off the coast of Los Angeles, CA More details to come as we get closer. If interested please let me know.

The deal is this:

Santa Cruz Island kayaking/hiking trip will be the second weekend in July (weekend after the 4th). We will have several experienced kayakers in our group, however conditions will be safe for kayakers of all abilaties. The plan is to go over on Friday AM and return Sunday afternoon (Kayaking on Saturday and Sunday AMs and hiking/exploring in the afternoons if the wind kicks up).

We will RENT a kayak from a local service.

http://www.islandkayakers.com. . .Check out the link to the 3 day kayak/ camping excursion.

They arrange just about everything for us (which is great!), but still allow us to go when and where we want. As stated above there are two (or 3) ways you can do this;
1. $130 if you want to kayak for the weekend. Includes kayak, all your kayaking gear, ferry over to the island and campsite fee.
2. $74 if you would rather just hike or hang out at the beach. Includes the ferry ride and campsite fee (no kayak).
3. A third way to do this is split the difference between the $120 and $74 with a friend and then one person kayak one day, and the other the second. (A great way to test out kayaking)

So come either way, if you want to kayak, or if you would rather just hike (or do a bit of both). We will all meet up for the afternoons and eveings at the campsite, so both Saturday and Sunday evenings will be big parties swimming and camping with the group at the beach!

We will finish up Sunday afternoon, take the ferry back to the mainland, and be back in Los Angeles around 6pm, so those from Seattle and out of town can catch a flight and get home around 10 pm.

KayakSantCruz.JPG (316K) !!! Trip is open to all, kayakers and non-kayakers, serious hikers and those that just want to take it easy around the beach on Santa Cruz Island.

*** Please contact Jim Jones (jim.jones5@comcast.net), or Marie Standing (marie.standing@verizon.net) if interested as we need to start colecting deposits to hold your spot. Space is limited! ***

The Channel Islands are awesome - details below. Very simular to other northwest trips we have taken, only warmer (great swimming and snorkeling. See the pictures from the Desolation Sound trip. We had 10 last time which worked great and a perfect size group.

For those coming from the Washington, it's a complete no-brainer to fly from Seattle to LAX (Los Angeles) - couple of hours and inexpensive. The overall cost of this trip is relatively cheap considering waht you get. As seen from above, it is only $130 if you are kayaking, and $74 if not. Then probably only another $35 per person for a weekend of food and alcohol. That is cheaper than staying at home.

Santa Crus Island, part of the the Channel Islands" is a rare find -- pristine, untouched islands off the coast of Southern Califonia, where the islands meets the world's biggest ocean; rugged, untamed, unspoiled, and unforgettable! Rolling surf, clear, endless beaches, and ever-changing skies mean that a cloudy morning can quickly give way to a glorious afternoon. Rocky points and small cliffs make ideal places to view dolfins and whales on their northbound migration when they come in close to shore to feed, often popping up in the coves, bays and inlets along the coast. Many hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty and long stretches of beach where the mighty Pacific breakers wash debris far up the beach, making this a haven for beachcombers.
