These are from the Honeymoon in the
Canadian Rockies
Athabasca Glacier
This was taken on top of the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National
Park. This glacier is part of the Columbia Icefields. The point
at which this photo was takes is over 100 yards thick with ice.
Emerald Lake
This is on Emerald Lake (with the Emerald Glacier creeping through in
the fore ground). This lake was only a few miles from our
lodge in Field (all within the Yoho
National Park). From the lake, you can take a number of killer
hikes, go horseback riding and (obviously) canoe.
Lake Hamilton
About a 2 hour hike above Emerald Lake (about 1,000 feet) is Lake
Hamilton. This was a great spot which was a lot quieter than Emerald
Lake; however, I would recommend taking horse up here. When sitting
by the lake, you need to keep an eye out for piqua and columbia squirrels.
They like to run up and give your packs a sniff.
Lake O'Hara
Lake O’Hara is the most incredible place we’ve ever been. About
7 miles from Field (and within Yoho), the Lake is a well maintained and
secluded destination. Behind Suzy, you may notice how clear the water
is (further behind is the Continental Divide). The water colour is
due to finely ground dissolved rock sediment which runs off from the glaciers.
Called "glacier flower" this suspended sediment absorbs longer wavelengths
of light (red, orange, yellow) and reflects shorter wavelengths (green
and blue). This gives the water an artificial looking emerald colour.
Lake Oesa
Around Lake O'Hare, there are a number of other smaller lakes (all
fed by the surrounding glaciers). Although this was a very secluded
area, we were pestered by a number of ptarmigans, a bird that looks like
a cross between a pigeon and a quail. We also saw a number
of hoary marmots (sunning on the rocks) and piqua. During the majority
of our 5 hours here, we saw very few people. Visitors are limited
to only 6 hikers a day in addition to those staying at the lodge or camp
site.
Above the Lake
From here, you can see Cathedral Mountain in the background as well
as the Lake
O'Hara Lodge (just to the left of the tree).
