Using a wireless flash controller

Photographing fish using a Canon420EX flash and an STE2 flash controller. The flash is set to slave mode and is sitting in a plastic container over the opening of the tank hood. The plastic helps diffuse the flash and reduce shadows a bit. The camera is set in macro mode and telephoto is zoomed in to get close without disturbing the fish.

When the flash fires, a broad area is illuminated.

The camera is set in manual focus mode and focus is pre-set to the desired distance. Fine tuning the focus is accomplished by moving the whole camera closer to or farther from the subject.

Using a black background and setting the camera at a high shutter speed and small aperture in Manual Exposure mode. I have also set the flash to underexpose by one F stop.

This combination of settings should underexpose the background enough to really make the subject stand out.
