Pennington Family Association newletter 6/3/1979
The story of the massacre and capture of William English and his family of Bean Station, Tennessee was a favorite story among the descendants of Dennis and Elizabeth Pennington. The following from the papers of Mabel Claxton Campbell, French Lick, Indiana, was written by Joseph Seacat in 1925 at the age of 85 years and stated to be in his own words. Joseph was son of Elizabeth Pennington and Jefferson Seacat.
"My Grandmother and the wife of Dennis Pennington was Elizabeth Floyd English. When she was some 3 years old, living in KY (Bean Station, TN) the Indians killed and scalped her father, took herself, mother and young baby, also brother 12 years old prisoners. The old Indian Chief and his wife took Grandmother to live with them. Her mother after being held sometime escaped while the Indians were out hunting. While on her way through the woods, following a path, she heard a dog bark. She knew the Indians were coming. There was a big tree that had fallen across the path and the tree was hollow, so she crawled in this log (fearful lest the baby should cry). Presently the Indians and dogs all passed over the log when she again resumed her journey and finally reached a white settlement safe. Her brother Matthew was with the Indians some 5 years and he got away and reached a shire settlement, then some few years after his escape he got two men to go with him on horses back to get his sister still with the Indians."Her brother went at a time when the men were all out on a hunting trip. When close to the camp where the Indians were, he crossed a small creek, and there the Indian boys and girls were playing. He got all the arrows in his hands to see which had the best arrow. Then he threw them in the creek, grabbed his sister, my Grandmother. She did not know him. He pulled her down to the creek bank, put her in a boat and held her and pushed the boat across a small creek. Some men who had come with her brother came with horses and her brother took her behind on his horse. He soon had her quiet talking Indian language to her. They arrived at a white settlement. Grandmother had lost out on her mother tongue, could only talk Indian language. She was a captive 7 years but was treated good by the old Chief and his wife. When I was a small boy I would sit by Grandmother's side and hear her talk of her life with the Indians. They were the most wonderful tales any person ever heard.. Everytime Grandmother came to our house we heard those stories over and over."

Elizabeth was born at Bean Station, Tennessee. When Elizabeth was 4 years
old, her family, which consisted of her father, mother, 7-year-old
brother Mathew, herself, and a baby sister, Virginia, was attacked and
captured by the Cherokee Indians. The father, Dr English was murdered and
the remainder of the family was kidnapped. The mother and baby were later
traded for 2 quarts of whiskey and shortly after that Mathew escaped.
Elizabeth remained with the Indians. After roaming throughout Indiana and
part of Kentucky with the Cherokees, she was traded to a Choctaw Chief.
Elizabeth grew to love her life with theIndians. After peace was made
with the Indians, Mathew returned for her, andafter much insistence,
finally persuaded her to return home. Elizabeth livedwith the Indians
for 7 years.Taken from:

Colonel WILLIAM GRESHAMThe Life of Walter Quintin Gresham, by Matilda Gresham (1919).
Colonel William Gresham, the father of Walter Q Gresham,
was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, September 17, 1802.He was the eldest son of George Gresham, who was born near Petersburg, Virginia, October 9, 1776.
Lawrence Gresham, the father of George, was born in England. In 1759,
when a small boy, Lawrence was sent to Virginia to live with his uncle -"indentured," it was called. After securing his "freedom" at his majority, Lawrence served for a time in the ranks of the
Continental army. While yet a young man, George Gresham joined the stream of emigrants pouring into Kentucky.
He "carried along" with him his father, Lawrence, then in feeble health, and his mother.
In 1801 in Mercer County, Kentucky, George Gresham married Mary Pennington,
the only sister of Dennis Pennington. In 1809 George Gresham moved his family, and entered land in Harrison County, Indiana,
where the hamlet of Lanesville is now located. He gave ground for the churches and graveyards.
In one of these cemeteries there are buried Lawrence, George and William Gresham,
representing three generations, and representatives of several subsequent generations.November 3, 1825, William Gresham married Sarah Davis.
They went to live in a log cabin on land his father had entered, within a mile of the father's house.
On this spot Sarah lived eighty-one years.William Gresham was elected by popular vote a colonel in the State militia, and in 1833,
although a Whig, was almost unanimously elected sheriff of Harrison County. January 26, 1834,
he was stabbed and instantly killed while aiding a constable to arrest a desperado named Levi Sipes.
There survived William Gresham, his widow, Benjamin and two younger sons,
Walter Quintin, born March 17, 1832, and William G, born July 30, 1833.========================================================================================

PALESTINE
Palestine Church was organized in April or May 1873, at what was known at that time as the Mastin School House, by Elder Isaac Johnson. The charter members were Noah Smith, Lucinda Smith, William Moberly, Harriett Moberly, Larkin Gresham, Sarah Gresham, John Oliver and wife, Sister Wingate, Frank Thorpe, Edward Frye, and Sister Botts. The same year, Palestine Church united with the Fishing River Association, and Elder C. W. Stout was the first pastor. In 1881, Joel Foree gave two acres of land for a meeting house and cemetery, and a new building was dedicated in June of that year. The building burned December 30, 1925, and was not replaced.

Jane is widowed living with her daughter Elizabeth Norton she is age 84Another tidbit from people who knew her:
"Virginia English, sister of Elizabeth, was nicknamed"Jinnie" and married Dennis Pennington's brother, William "Billie" Pennington, in 1804. It was one ofthe first marriages in the in territory and the first in Harrison County. They always lived near Lanesville,Indiana. She had a mind of her own as this story relates: After 50 years of marriage, with children and grandchildren scattered over several counties,
"Billie" came home one day and stated: "Jinnie, we must hitch up at once and go to Corydon and get married again. The preacher who married us has been indicted for horse stealing and they have taken away his licence (thus rendering void all of his acts)." "Jinnie" argued that a marriage lasting 50 years could not be affected but "Billie" was insistent, and the discussion became warm. Finally "Jinnie" closed the debate with: "Well, when "Jinnie" marries again it will not be to "Billie" Pennington."So I strongly believe that The 2 wives that you have for William are in fact the same person.
I only mention this info because I believe that there is already too much erroneous info on the web. Then someone else sees it, copies it and passes it along as gospel, so I believe it is up to us to try to keep as close to proven facts as possible, and also keeping a good record of sources, which I did not do when starting my quest some 35 years ago..

Pennington, died June 5th (1881) at her residence near Millard, Missouri. Mrs. Mary H. Pennington, wife of the late deceased William V. Pennington, aged 89 years. Deceased was born in Ghent, Carrol Co., KY., in 1793.
She married in 1808 and moved to Illinois with her husband where she lived two years, and from thence to Missouri where she has since resided. She was a mother of 15 children, 11 or whom survive her, Mrs. C. W. Oliver of this vicinity (Howard, KS) being a daughter. She sought and found the Saviour while young and always tried to live a devoted Christian life, and when death with all its terrors came she calmly said, "I am ready to go". As the sun went down the last night of her life, she said something like this, "As the sun sinks in the golden west, just so my soul will sink to rest, and when to-morrow's sun is risen, this body will be out of prison." During the last hours of her illness her sufferings were great, but she bore them with that meek submission which always attends the Christian Spirit. She had been a member of the Church for 70 years, and died trusting her Heavenly Father to give her the home prepared for her. She leaves may relatives and friends to mourn her loss; but their loss is her eternal gain.
