884 M vii Walter Lee Pennington was born 11 Feb 1846 in Harrison County, Indiana. He died 1 Dec 1929 in Cowley County, Kansas and was buried in Mt Zion Cemetery, Cowley County, Kansas. Obituary from the OXFORD REGISTER, Thursday, December 5, 1929 Brother and Sister Die and Buried at Same Hour. Walter Lee Pennington, 83, a pioneer of the Western Cowley County district, died Friday morning at the home of his sisters, Misses Sallie and Amanda Pennington, two miles southeast of here. He had been in ill health for several years. Mr. Pennington was born in Harmon, County Indiana February 11, 1846 coming west to the present Pennington home in 1871. In 1878 he went to Colorado and engaged in the mining business where he remained until 1924, at that time retiring to his early day home. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Martha Carson of Buena Vista, Colorado, Misses Amanda and Sally of Oxford, two brothers, H H of Argonia and A D of Cadoo, Oklahoma and a number of nieces and nephews. He was adherent to the Christian faith. Burial took place at the Mt. Zion cemetery after a funeral service from the home Sunday afternoon. Later news relative to the Pennington family carried an unusual circumstance. The same night that Walter Pennington died here and almost to the same hour Mrs. Jonathan Hubbard (Mary Pennington) his sister, age 81 passed away at her home in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Then on Sunday afternoon at the identical hour, two o'clock, that the funeral service was being held here for the one, the same kind of a service was being held there in Oklahoma for the other. Neither the relatives here, nor there knew of the death, at the time, of the other. Word came here the fore part of this week to Misses Sallie and Amanda announcing the death of their sister.

890 F xiii Amanda C Pennington was born 4 Feb 1857 in Harrison County, Indiana. She died 23 Apr 1939 in Cowley County, Kansas and was buried in Mt Zion Cemetery, Cowley County, Kansas. Obituary from the WINFIELD COURIER, April 24, 1939 PIONEER WOMAN PASSES Amanda Pennington Died at Rural Residence Near Oxford Miss Amanda C .Pennington, 82, resident of near Oxford, in Vernon Township since the early 70's, died at her home south and east of Oxford at about nine o'clock Sunday evening. She suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and death followed soon. However Miss Pennington had been in failing health for some time. Funeral services will be held from the rural home at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Paul Gross, Christian Church pastor in charge, according to announcement made here by Oliver Mortuary of Oxford. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. The death of Miss Pennington followed by about two weeks that of a brother Andy, with whom she had lived. As a sister Sarah died at the same home about a year ago all of the Pennington family are gone from the old home place, one of the largest and best cared for in the county. Two immediate survivors include a brother and a sister in Winfield, Martha Pennington Carson and Henry Pennington. Miss Amanda, always a quiet, home loving person was born February 4, 1857 in Harrison County, Indiana, the daughter of Walter Lee and Mary Peter Pennington. She came to Kansas in the Oxford community as a child accompanying her parents and other members of the family.

891 F xiv Sarah C Pennington was born 14 Sep 1859 in Harrison County, Indiana. She died 4 Mar 1938 in Cowley County, Kansas and was buried in Mt Zion Cemetery, Cowley County, Kansas. Obituary from the OXFORD REGISTER, March 10, 1938 Sarah Pennington Rites Funeral services were held from the Pennington farm home two and a half miles southeast of Oxford on Sunday March sixth at two o'clock for Sarah Pennington, age 79, a resident on this farm since 1871. Rev. Paul Gross, pastor of the Oxford Christian Church officiated at the service. Mr. and Mrs. Chester O'Neil and Miss Nellie Oldham sang "Old Rugged Cross" "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Pallbearers were Lee Brown, Leonard Shriver, Thomas Nostine, Tom Shriver, Clarence Poovey and Theron Beaman all residents of the Oxford community near the home. Burial was made in the Mt. Zion cemetery with Oliver Mortuary in charge. Sarah "Sally" Pennington was born in Harrison County Indiana September 14, 1859 and died March 4,1938. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lee Pennington. She was the 14th of 15 children born to this union. All but one grew to adulthood, now only four survive: Henry, Andy, Martha Carson and Amanda. Of this group Henry and Martha Carson live in Winfield while Andy and Amanda still live on the old farm home to which all came sixty one years ago. The father preceded her in death in 1893 and her mother in 1899. During her early womanhood Miss Pennington cared for a number of sick people of the community and was a splendid neighbor to all. The past few years she had been in poor health but her kindly deeds to the older people of the community will always be remembered as years go on. She was truly a good woman. ONE OF PIONEER FAMILY PASSES AWAY IN KANSAS Funeral rites were held from the old Walter Lee Pennington farm near Oxford Sunday, for Sarah C. Pennington, resident of the same farm near Oxford since 1871. Rev. Paul Gross, pastor of the Oxford Christian church, officiated at the services. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery, west of Winfield. Sarah C. Pennington was born in Harrison county, Ind. 1859 and died March 4, 1938. She came to Kansas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Pennington, three sisters, one brother, a nephew and two nieces in 1871. The family went through Winfield on June 15. They moved to the Arkansas valley farm on Oct. 1,1871. Two brothers, William and Henry, had gone there in March, 1870, and the family followed. The Pennington family is of English descent with some Irish on the paternal side, Welsh and German, on the maternal side. The first Edward Pennington was one of the English noblemen who established the first permanent settlement at Jamestown, VA. Sarah's grandfather, Dennis Pennington, was born at Mecklenburg county, Va., in 1776. His father and three brothers were in the Revolutionary War. When Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown and the Britisher was too proud to hand his sword to Washington, he handed it to a captain - Benjamin Pennington -- who in turn gave it to General George Washington. When Dennis Pennington was about 19 the family moved to Ky., riding horseback by the side of Henry Clay. In Kentucky about 1800, he met and married Elizabeth English. Four years later the family including one child moved to Indiana. Elizabeth English was a cousin of William English, who was a candidate for the vice-presidency of the United States, with Hancock as presidential nominee. The Dennis Penningtons crossed the Ohio river in a log canoe which Mr. Pennington made from a tree felled for this express purpose. They crossed at a point near the present location of Louisville, Ky., and New Albany, Ind. They settled near the present site of Corydon, Ind. There Dennis Pennington, with the help of his brothers, built the first state house of Indiana. With the exception of the child born in Ky., all the Dennis Pennington children were born in Indiana, including Walter Lee, father of Sarah. Walter Lee married Mary Peter, a cousin of Jefferson Davis and relatives of Robert E. Lee, both of Southern and Civil War fame. Sarah was the fourteenth child born to this union. Of the fifteen children born to the Walter Lee Penningtons, all but one grew to adulthood. Of the large family, four survive, Henry, Andy, Martha Carson and Amanda.

892 F xv Martha Jane Pennington was born 23 Aug 1862 in Harrison County, Indiana. She died 7 Dec 1945 in Cowley County, Kansas. WINFIELD COURIER, December 10, 1945 Mrs. Martha Jane Carson Services for Mrs. Martha Jane Carson, who died Friday were held from the Morris Funeral Home Saturday at 3 p.m. Malvin Schuyler, representative of the Jehovah Witnesses organization officiated. Mrs. Owen Nesbit sang two songs. Burial was in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery northwest of Winfield. Among he pallbearers were Bert Woodward, Emory Earhart and Bill Carson. TANDARD CERTIFICATE OF DEATH THE KANSAS STATE BOARD OF HEALTH Division o Vital Statistics 1. PLACE OF DEATH a. County Cowley WICHITA BEACON, SEPTEMBER 25, 1936 INVESTIGATION HELD: AGED FARM WOMAN IS SHOT BY BROTHER FAMILY OF PIONEERS WINFIELD, KS. SEPT. 25 - A 73 year-old woman, Mrs. Martha Carson of near Oxford, was in Newton Memorial Hospital today with a bullet wound in the upper part of her body and her 81 year old brother, Andrew Pennington, was held in jail here pending the outcome of an investigation of the affair. Mrs. Carson charges her brother intentionally shot her, intending, she alleges, to take her life. Pennington, on the other hand, contends the wounding of his sister was accidental. Other members of the family, all elderly people who live together on the homestead, differ in their versions of the shooting. Andrew Pennington, charged with the shooting, and Mrs. Carson, the wounded woman, live with their sisters, Amanda, 79, and Sarah, 77 and a brother, Henry, 86, on the farm 3 miles from Oxford, which was homesteaded by their parents in 1870. ON HOMESTEAD For 66 years Amanda and Sarah have lived on that same farm and as the mates of their sister and brothers died, they too returned to the family home. Pennington claims he had the gun in his possession for protection against a sister-in-law, Anna Conrad, who he claims had threatened him profanely when she visited the farm recently. He claims she was under the influence of liquor at the time. The aged man contends his sister hid the gun and that he requested its return. The shooting, Pennington declares was accidental, as he demonstrated the operation of the weapon, a pistol. Amanda Pennington corroborates the story of her brother that the shooting was accidental, whereas Henry Pennington concurs with his sister, the wounded woman, that Andrew Pennington deliberately and intentionally fired at Mrs. Carson. DIFFERED Although members of the family contend there had been no difficulties, reliable sources of information reveal there was a rift in relations between the aged brothers and sisters, who are characterized as "eccentric" by their neighbors. One sister, Sarah, is mentally deficient, it is said. Although the wounded woman spent a reasonably quiet night Thursday and is believed to be in "fair" condition, police officers are deferring action in filing charges until it is definitely known whether she will recover. The estranged wife of Andrew Pennington is said to live in Wichita, but could not be reached there Saturday morning. WICHITA EAGLE, September 25, 1936, Page 7 PROBE SHOOTING OF AGED KANSAN WINFIELD - SEPT. 24 - AP - County officers were investigating tonight the shooting early today of Mrs. Martha Carson, 73, who was wounded in the chest at the farm home 10 miles west of here she occupies with two brothers and two sisters all more than 70 years old. Mrs. Carson was in a serious condition in a Winfield hospital. County officers took into custody her brother, Andrew Pennington, 81. He was held in the Cowley County jail without charge pending the outcome of the investigation. County Attorney, Earl H. Wright ordered Pennington's detention after hearing the story of Mrs. Carson. He said the aged man told him his sister was wounded when a pistol accidentally was discharged. Wright said Mrs. Carson's sister Amanda, 79, expressed belief the shooting was accidental. Another sister, Sarah Pennington, 77, was ill and could not be questioned. Henry Pennington, 86, the other member of the household, was unable to explain the shooting, Wright said. The Pennington family homesteaded the farm in 1870 and Miss Sarah and Miss Amanda, neither of whom married, have lived there 66 years. Mrs. Carson, Henry and Andrew returned to the farm to live several years ago. OXFORD REGISTER, October 1, 1936.

Jonathan J Hubbard

Served in Company C of the 17th Indiana Infantry as a private during the Civil War.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHBOOK OF LEADING CITIZENS OF COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS 1901 Jonathan J. Hubbard, a veteran of the Civil War, is one of the prosperous farmers of Cowley County, Kansas residing on section eighteen, in Vernon Town- ship. He is a native of Harrison County, Indiana and a son of James Hubbard. His grandfather was born on the other side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Virginia, and both his grandfathers were in the Battle of Tippecanoe, in which the paternal grandfather was shot in the left arm necessitating amputation. James Hubbard was born in Virginia but was taken to Harrison County, Indiana in 1800, the year of his birth. From his father he learned farming, which was his occupation throughout his entire active career. About the commencement of the War of the Rebellion, he broke his thigh and though he was unable to serve in behalf of the Union, his sons, nevertheless, voiced his patriotism, as several of them enlisted in the Union Army. Mr. Hubbard was united in marriage with Rebecca Battman, who was also born in Harrison County, Indiana and whose parent were natives of England and Scotland The issue of this union was ten sons and two daughters, namely: Jeremiah; John Mary E.(Burnett); Francis Marion; Jonathan J.; Christopher Columbus; Andrew Jackson; Benjamin Franklin; James K. Polk; Elvira (Newkirk); Josiah; and George Washington. Mr. Hubbard passed to the other world in 1890, after living four score and ten years. His widow died at the age of sixty-eight years. Jonathan J. Hubbard was reared in Crawford County, Indiana, although in after years he returned to Harrison County, and there lived until 1870, when, on October twenty second, he became a resident of Cowley County, Kansas. He settled on this present claim in section eighteen, Vernon Township, and has ever since been actively engaged in pursuing the vocation of a farmer. He has been very successful throughout his life and has one of the finest farms in his vicinity. He is a good neighbor and loyal citizen and is highly esteemed by all who know him. Mr. Hubbard chose for his life companion Mary H Pennington, a native of Harrison County, Indiana, and their home has been blessed by the birth of seven children named as follows; Dennis; Elvira, dec.; Rebecca (Porter); Floyd W.; Rosalind; Nicholas Smith; and Howard. When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Hubbard laid aside all plans for the future to take part in the contest for the preservation of the Union. He became a private in Co. C 17th Reg., Ind. Vol. Inf. He enlisted December 6, 1861, and served three years and nine months. He was in the battle of Chickamauga, and in the engagement at Selma, Alabama, where eighteen of the thirty six men in his Company were killed. He saw two weeks of constant fighting around Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia, at which time his Company was under John T Wilder. In many of the skirmishes he was so near the Confederates that he could see their eyes. He too part in the Atlanta campaign, during which he was at the front on skirmish duty While under fire Mr. Hubbard was always cool and deliberate, and although he displayed much valor, he was not a man to expose himself needlessly to danger. Many a time he lay behind rocks which the enemy's bullets scaled, and he has concealed himself behind stumps, while the leaden missiles peeled the bark from the other side. On one occasion a bullet passed through his blouse, and he has felt the wind from hundreds of bullets, but fortunately he never received a single scratch from any of them.

621. Sarah C. Pennington

Martha Carson, who suffered a lung wound when accidentally shot by her brother Andy Pennington at the Pennington house east of Oxford last Thursday morning, is reported to be improving at the Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield. KANSAN, 81, WILL BE TRIED FOR SHOOTING Bound Over at Winfield on Charges of Wounding Sister in Quarrel WINFIELD, Jan. 13.--(AP)-Anderson Pennington, 81, will stand trial for shooting and wounding his 74-year-old sister last September at the home they shared with three other aged brothers and sisters. Bound over for trial at a preliminary hearing today on a charge of assault with intent to kill, Pennington was freed on $5,000 bond. Mrs. Pennington Carson was principal witness at the hearing. She testified she was shot in the breast after warning her brother the gun he held was loaded. She said there had been a "misunderstanding" over the estate owned jointly by the five and that Anderson believed he was to be "run off the place." Other members of the family are Sarah Pennington, 77, Amanda Pennington, 79, and Henry Pennington, 86. Martha married John G Carson on 25 Feb 1895. John was born 1864 in Scotland. 1920 census of Precinct 4, Chaffee County, Colorado, NA Film T625-156, page 4A, John G Carson, 55, born in Indiana, Martha J, wife, 57, born in Kentucky, Enoch Pennington, brother-in-law, divorced, 67, born in Indiana.

From Washington County, Kentucky. His family came to Harrison County, Ind. in 1815.

Robert Davis (1814-1897) was born in Mercer County, Kentucky.

Jane Pennington (1815-1907) was born in Moberly, Ind.

They were married in 1836 in Corydon & had 12 children (who lived-one source says they had total of 18).

Both are buried in Harrison Co., Ind. My aunt, Wanda (Gurtz) McClaren remembered her great grandmother Davis (Jane Pennington) who lived on the 2nd floor with the Sanford Martins & "smoked a pipe."
She said that she remembered because when she was about 4 years old, her great grandmother gave her a pair of scissors, & when she ran to tell her "grandma" she fell down the steps.
