Also see info from family Bible listed in the notes for husband, Elias Strother.

From the Elias Strother (Agnes Bell) family Bible: Agnes Bell married Levi L. Littell on 13 July 1848 (Harrison County Indiana State records indicate 14 July 1848); later married Elias Strother on 17 October 1856. Her son Jasper Littell came to Kansas first. Later his mother came with the other children; many of the children died as babies [Charlotte M. 6 DEC 1862 3 years 1 month, an infant daughter 17 JUL 1868, and Elias Jr. 6 AUG 1862 6 months]. For other details from the family Bible see John Quincy Adams Strother notes.

Pennington Family: Dennis Pennington, father of Agnes Parker Bell's on her mother's side. Marker at the First Methodist Church building built at the Pennington's Chapel Methodist Cemetery, southwest corner of Jackson Township, Harrison County, Indiana, in the southwest quarter of section 11, township 3 south, range 3 east. Marker reads: Dennis Pennington, teacher, legislator, and lay minister. Born May 19, 1776, Mecklenburg County, Cumberland Parish, Virginia. Came to Kentucky with Henry Clay in 1797 and to Indiana Territory in 1804. Signer of the first state constitution; served 29 years in the territorial and state legislatures. Census enumerator 1815 and 1850. Died Sep 2, 1854. Elizabeth wife of Dennis Pennington. Born 1783 near Bean Station, Tenn. Daughter of Wm. and Catherine English. Captured by the Indians in 1787. Adopted by a Cherokee Chieftain. Married August 4, 1800 and died after March 1857.

Need to research the records in Mecklenburg County, Cumberland Parish, Virginia to trace the Agnes Parker Bell relationship with the Penningtons.

From Pioneer Footprints Across Woods County, by Gladys L. Burnham, p. 103-104: In 1883 another family, this one from Corydon, Indiana, came to Barber County. This family consisted of a widow, Agnes Strother, her three [note only three of the four Strother daughters living at the time were mentioned. Perhaps Nancy J. remained behind in Indiana. She would have been 26 years old if you use Gladys' date of 1883Ñ24 if you use Mack Strother's date of 1881] young daughters and two small sons. Two older children of a former marriage had alread come with their familes to Kansas. One of these, Mrs. John Snyder [Snider???] [Mary G. Littell] was the mother of Levi Snyder who served as an early commissioner of Woods Conty and was in business in Alva for many years. The other was Jasper Littell, father of Willard and Ray Littell, who farmed in Woods County north of Alva. The youngest son, John Strother, was to serve later ast an early day sheriff of Woods County.

The Burnham and Strother families became neighbors in Kansas. Howard Burnham married Elizabeth, the oldest of the three Strother daughters. They established a home near the elder Burnhams west of Kiowa. Here their four children, Nellie, Robert, Ruth, and Gladys were born.

Elias Strother

Elias Strother
Shows up on the list of Harrison Cavalry volunteers organized at Corydon in Harrison Township, Harrison County, Indiana, dated 9 September 1862. Formed as a Volunteer Cavalry Company in the Indiana Legion under the provisions of "An Act for the Organization and Regulation of the Indiana Militia" approved May 11, 1861 by the Indiana State Legislature. Note also in the same list are other possible family inlaws surnames: Snider, Littell, and Dick. Source: Walter S. The first chruch established at this cemetery was known as the Indian Creek Baptist, however, the original Indian Creek Baptist Church stood approximately one half mile S.E. of Oak Grove at the top of the hill west of Corydon on the old Corydon-Leavenworth Road. After they dis to use the silt at Oak Grove, the Methodists established a church here. The ground for the cemetery was donated by "Aunt Polly Littell, widow of Joseph L."

Pennington Chapel Jackson Township Harrison County, Indiana. Pennington's Chapel Methodist Cemetery is located in the very S.W. corner of Jackson Township, Harrison County, Indiana in the S.E. quarter of Section 11, Township 3S, Range 3E.

The first Methodist Church building built at the cemetery about 1815 was a log one and was reestablished atop "Pennington Chapel Ridge" by two brothersÑDennis and "Uncle Walty" Pennington. The earlier mentioned was a Methodist minister and the former was the builder of Indiana's first capitol in Corydon. This first log cabin church burned and a second log church was erected to replace the first. A third church building, dedicated in 1869, is a frame building located just south of the cemetery on the beautiful "ridge."

The family Bible has a publishing date of 1854. The Bible was in Agnes Bell's handwriting until she died, then Nellie MacGregor's until she died, and then Rosella Springer's. The Strother-Littell family Bible is currently maintained by Lois Ruth Strother Dillion's daughter, Susan Hamilton, Tacoma, Washington. Note, from the Mack Strother tapes, Mack says that the family Bible was given to his father, John Strother, because, before Elias Strother died, Elias said, Òthe Bible should go to the unborn child.Ó Agnes was pregnant with John when Elias died. John was born just 24 days later.

[In any case she did not make the trip to Kansas with her mother in 1881 or 1883 depending upon whether you use Mack Strother's date or Gladys Burnham's. Gladys Burnham is the daughter of Nancy J. Strother's sister Elizabeth A. Strother. Gladys says that her father married the oldest of the three Strother daughters to come to Kansas from Corydon, Indiana.]
[later in Kansas Mary has a son, Levi Snyder, who became a Woods County commissioner. Maybe they popularized the "i" in Snider to become Snyder. The Harrison Cavalry lists Sniders as well as Agnes' bible lists John Snider.]

G. W. Porterfield does not seem to go to Kansas with Elizabeth and her mother in 1883. Further research is required here.]

1180. Nancy J. Strother

Did Nancy have the nickname ÒBelleÓ?

1186. Infant Daughter Strother

Infant Daughter born to Elias and Agnes P. Bell Strother
The family Bible give the date of birth as 17 July 1865. We take that to be a misprint since Reatha R. was born 19 November 1865 and lived to the age of 16 years. We assume that it should be either 1866, 1867, or 1868 since she was born after Reatha in 1865 and before Martha in 1969.

Record from Pennington Family Research Association labeled ÒJMFM00-2 on 8/30/03Ó shows childs name as possibly Ruth R. Strother. Family Bible only says Òinfant daughterÓ.

Elias StrotherÕs motherÕs name was Ruth.

Levi L. Littell

From the Elias Strother (Agnes Bell) family Bible: Agnes Bell married Levi L. Littell on 13 July 1848 (Harrison County Indiana State records indicate 14 July 1848).

Pennington Family Research Association record shows 12 July 1848. Id go with Agnes Bible date of 13 July 1848.
