The father of Charles Thompson was Hardin Thompson, who was born in Harrison County, Indiana. He received very little education, being a student in those pioneer log cabin schools whose greased paper windows and hewed log benches have been so frequently described in the literature of that period. He spent his life as a farmer and was a republican in politics. He died a number of years ago, when about seventy-five years old. His widow, who still lives in Washington County, Indiana, bore the maiden name of Elizabeth Pennington, daughter of Walter Pennington. Their children were: Charles; Lee, of Waurika, Oklahoma; John, of Winfield, Kansas; Floyd, of Floyd County, Indiana; Annie, wife of Jane Rippey, of Harrison County, Indiana; Amanda, who married John Wire, of Washington County, Indiana; George, who died in Indiana at the age of eighteen years; Media, wife of James Neely, of Sumner County, Kansas; Ella, who died in Sumner County; Katie, of Louisville, Kentucky; and William H., who is in Kansas.
1200. Charles Thompson
Charles Thompson
CHARLES THOMPSON. Among the eager home seekers who invaded the region of Meade County in February, 1885, were Charles Thompson and his wife and children. They reached here with an abundance of hope and courage but with practically no material assets, and now that it is possible to look back over an experience of thirty years it is evident that they had about as many trials and adverdities as beset others who came with them or about the same time, but Mr. Thompson had those qualities which enabled him to stay and endure, and his present fortunate circumstances are undoubtedly the reward that he completely deserves.
He was born in Harrison County, Indiana, September 14, 1853. He represents a family that has been in America for several generations. His great grandfather, John Thompson, was an Englishman, and on coming to America settled in Virginia, then went to Kentucky, where his son John, our subjects's grandfather, was born, and there the old pioneer died. John, the second, moved to Indiana and there married Miss Rohl, of Pennsylvania German ancestry. Their children were: Joseph, Floyd, Hardin, John, Mrs. America Hicks, Mrs. Mary Cunningham, Mrs. Katie Thompson and Sindicy, who married Patrick Tobin.
The country schools of Harrison County, Indiana, gave Charles Thompson his early advantages. In November, 1877, at the age of twenty-four, he married Miss Viola Phillips. Mrs. Thompson is a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Hayes) Phillips. Her father, who was a United Brethren minister, moved to Harrison County, Indiana, from Muskingum County, Ohio. He died in Harrison County about 1874 and his wife in 1878. Of their children Mrs. Thompson was the oldest. Her sister May married Rev. Mr. Heddin, her brother Hayes died in Indiana, her brother Eugene lives in Illinois, and her sister Miss Della is a resident of California.
When Mr. and Mrs. Thompson came to Kansas they had two children. A complete record of their family of children and grandchildren at the present time is as follows. Alda, the oldest, married Homer Sumpter, of Colorado, and has two children, Verdie Mae and Bernice; Arthur, lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming; Etna is the wife of F. J. Weidner, of Colorado, and has one child, Monzelle; Nellie is the wife of Lloyd Ogle, of Big Sandy, Montana; the youngest of the family, Winnie, is a student in Southwestern University at Winfield, Kansas. Rilda Monzel, the second daughter, married Lemuel Kiger. At the age of twenty-four she was struck by lightning and killed. Chester A., twin brother of Arthur, settled in Montana, and died at the age of twenty-two.
On arriving in Meade County in February, 1885, Mr. Thompson entered a pre-emption on the Osage lands in section 12, township 34, range 26. After proving it up he homesteaded in section 31 of the same township and range. At that time the county was being rapidly settled. Only a few years later discouragement took the place of hope and eagerness and more people were trying to get away than desired to remain. As Mr. Thompson looks back upon that trying period he feels that he would have gone too could he have made the proper disposition of his affairs. His pioneer home was a dugout soddy on his pre-emption, and he lived in a similar place when he entered his homestead. For about four years he and his family lived "half underground." The equipment which he brought to Meade County consisted for the most part of a good team, two or three cows, some of whose posterity he still owns, a breaking plow and a harrow. He had already had about a year's experience of Kansas life, having spent that time in Sumner County, from which locality he drove into Meade County, arriving here with a face capital of $1.30. Like others he started farming and in 1885 had a good crop of corn from the sod and this was followed by another reasonably good yield. In 1887 the failures began, and for several years it was impossible to make a living from land alone. In this crisis Mr. Thompson resorted to freighting, breaking sod, cultivating and improving tree claims for absent settlers, and anything else that offered the chance of earning an honest dollar. He hauled freight from Dodge City to Englewood, but when the railroad built to the latter point he gave up this business. One season he returned to an eastern county and harvested as a means of supplying the family larder. Mr. Thompson was one of the early wheat growers of Meade County, but after a few years of success he lost his seed and having no funds to provide more he gave up wheat farming. The mainstay of his efforts for a number of years was cattle raising. When at the high tide of his work as a cattle man he had about 100 head of Shorthorns. As he prospered he began buying cheap land, and eventually owned over 1,000 acres. He gradually disposed of this and recently sold the remainder of his land, so that he is now really retired so far as farming is concerned. While in the country Mr. Thompson did much to improve his property and erected several sets of farm buildings. On his tree claim he set out a grove of timber that developed and grew astonishingly. His old sod house was succeeded by a frame structure and he also fenced and cross fenced his ranch. Since 1915 he has lived in Meade and has helped the forward growth and development of that town with the building of his own residence.
His only official service was as a member of the School Board of district No. 41 and later of district No. 22. As a republican he cast his first vote for Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, and has never missed supporting the republican candidates at every presidential election.Transcribed from A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans, written and compiled by William E. CLAXTON, Rolla, Springs Valley Herald (May 21, 1931) Death Notice - R.V. CLAXTON, 65 COMMITS SUICIDE AT HIS HOME HERE - Ill Health Given as Reason; Uses Army Revolver in Bathroom - FUNERAL HELD TUESDAY - Rolla V. Claxton, 65 years of age, well known retired business man of French Lick, committed suicide last Sunday afternoon at his home here. Ill health was given as the reason for Mr. Claxton's act. Mr. Claxton had just finished dinner when he retired to the bathroom apparently in the best of spirits. He undressed, put on his night clothes, stepped into the bathtub and place a 38 revolver to his temple. Death was instantaneous, according to the physicians. Mrs. Claxton and her sister, Mrs. Mollie Askren, were the only others in the house at the time of the tragedy. No indication was given by Mr. Claxton that he had suicidal intentions, according to friends of the family. He appeared in as good health as usual, although he had steadily declined in health for the past five years. After the suicide a note was found in which he declared his intention to take his own life and expressing a desire to be buried in the suit of clothes he had taken off previous to shooting himself. The bullet, which was fired from a 38 calibre Army special pistol, was found in the yeard after it had gone through the bathroom door. Mr. Claxton, for the past fifty years, until his retirement from business in 1927, had been actively connected with the mercantile business in French Lick, He was born in Orange County and attended the Paoli High School, from which he graduated. He came to French Lick when 16 years of age and started working in his uncle's store here. He became a member of the firm of Well, Claxton and Claxton in 1887. He later formed a partnership with A. C. Smith and under the name Smith and Claxton conducted a very successful retail business in French Lick. W. W. Cave was later admitted to the firm, the name of which was changed to the French Lick Mercantile Co. In 1910 Mr. Claxton took the hardware department of the business and moved it to a new building at the corner of Indiana and College streets. He remained in business here until 1927, when he sold his interest to Ralph McCampbell, who has since conducted it. He was united in marriage to Miss Kate Pennington. One daughter, Mabel was born to them, who together with Mrs. Claxton, survives him. He was a member of the French Lick M. E. Church, having served as one of the trustees of this church since 1894. He was also a member of French Lick Lodge No. 586, Free and Accepted Masons, and the French Lick IOOF lodge. Mr. Claxton was well known, both in French Lick and in the surrounding community. He was the first Clerk-Treasurer of French Lick when it was incorporated, and served as postmaster here from 1902 to 1910. In 1927, after selling his store here, Mr. Claxton and his family moved to Indianapolis, where they remained until last fall, when they moved back to their home here. Mr. Claxton had always taken a keen interest in the place of his successes, and his longing for old friends and acquaintances was the motive for moving back to French Lick. Mr. Claxton had been in failing health for the past five years, and a steadily increasing difficulty of seeing and hearing is thought to have exerted its influence over him in carrying out his suicidal plans. Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs. Mattie Schroeder of Watseka, Ill., two brothers, James T. Claxton of Dayton, Ohio and Charles O. Claxton of French Lick. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the French Lick M. E. Church, with Rev. A. L. Meredith, pastor, officiating. The body laid in state at the church from noon until time for the funeral, to allow all of his friends and acquaintances to view him.. Following the church services, burial was made at Ames Chapel cemetery. All business houses in French Lick were closed out of respect for Mr. Claxton during the time of the funeral. Springs Valley Herald (May 21, 1931) Obituary - Rolla V. Claxton, son of Thomas and Rosanna Wells Claxton, was born near Paoli, Orange County, Indiana, October 30th, 1865 and departed this life at French Lick, Indiana, May 17th, 1931. His boyhood days were spent in the vicinity where he was born. He received his education in the neighborhood and later attended the Paoli High School and from which he graduated. At the age of 16 years he came to French Lick, Indiana where he obtained a position in the general store of his Uncle Hiram E. Wells. Through diligence and close application to business he became a member of the firm Wells, Claxton, and Claxton about the year 1887, which firm was later know as H. E. Wells and Company. In 1894 he formed a partnership with A. C. Smith and under this partnership they conducted a very successful business for many years. In 1907 W. W. Cave became a member of the firm which was conducted under the name of the French Lick Mercantile Company until 1910 when Mr. Claxton took over the hardware department of the business in his own name which he conducted successfully until 1927, when, on account of failing health, he sold out his business and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, returning to French Lick in 1930 to live. In 1894 he was united in marriage to Kate Pennington and to this union was born one daughter, Mabel, who with the widow survives him. In 1894 he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at French Lick, Indiana. Soon after he was elected as a member of the Board of Trustees of this church in which position he continued to serve until his death. He lived his church and was a liberal supporter of the same through all the years. He was a member of the Masonic and IOOF Lodges at French Lick, Indiana. Except for the period of about three years, he was in close touch with French Lick and vicinity for a period of fifty years and has always been interested in its welfare. He was public spirited and his contribution to the growth and development of his town was manifested in many ways. He had the distinction of serving as the first Clerk and Treasurer of the town when French Lick was incorporated. He served as Postmaster from 1902 to 1910. For the greater part of his business career he gave his attention to the hardware line in which he became well known as one of the bet informed men of his time in the retail hardware business. His devotion to his business was an outstanding characteristic. He naturally loved people and people loved him and perhaps no one with his radius of business had a better and closer contact with his acquaintances. It was universally said "that everyone liked Rolla Claxton." He never failed to make friends with a child, attracting children by his sunny disposition, wit and humor and delighting them with his ability to entertain. Throughout life he was seldom too busy and never too tired to play with a child, giving freely of his time, money and loving understanding. A fine tribute to his generous nature paid by his associates in business was "that not an unpleasant word ever was said by him to them in many years of close contact." He was domestic in his nature and loved his home and liked to spend his leisure hours with his family. He idolized his daughter and made many sacrifices for his family that he might provide a competence for his loved ones when he should become unable to work. The last years of his life brought to him serious illness and affliction that was a severe trial to him, but he bore it all with great fortitude and patience and endeavored to carry with him a spirit of optimism. His passing was a great shock to his family and friends as well and the world can not be quite the same again without his presence. Besides his wife and daughter he leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs. Mattie Schroeder of Watseka, Ill.; two brothers, James T. Claxton of Dayton, Ohio and Charles O. Claxton of French Lick, Indiana with many other relatives and friends who will keenly feel the loss in his passing. Submitted by Tom Agan .
PENNINGTON, Rebecca, Springs Valley Herald (May 6, 1915) ObituaryRebecca Conrad, daughter of Emanuel and Mahala Conrad was born Aug. 20, 1838. Died April 19, 1915, aged 76 years, 7 months and 19 days. She was married to Charles P. Pennington Dec. 4, 1856. To this union were born six children, five of whom are living. On Dec. 25, 1872 her husband was called Home leaving her to fight the battles of life alone. This sorrow was almost more than she could bear. The responsibility of rearing her children falling upon her she assumed it with a courage that took no defeat. Her one aim was to raise them to be noble men and women and she always held before them the highest standards of uprightness, truthfulness, honesty and cleanness of life. She tolled early and late to provide for and educate them. She had three grandchildren whom she loved as dearly as her own. He love and tenderness went out to them in an unusual way. The always knew that "Mother Pennington" would have time for the little things which came into their lives and it was their custom to go to her for help and sympathy which never failed to be granted. She had four great grandchildren. In early life she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. When trials pressed hard she never failed to lean on the Lord Jesus and took as her companion his Holy Word. It was her habit to especially remember the texts of sermons and every where among books are t be found slips of paper with scripture references written upon them, showing her great meditation upon the Word. She put forth great efforts to have her children established to the Kingdom of the Lord before they launched out into the world. She was afflicted for many years, but was a patient sufferer. During her last illness she witnessed the presence of Jesus in her soul always saying "your will not mine, be done." She never failed to ask the Lord to save all without the loss of one. Funeral services were held in the family residence in French Lick, Ind., conducted by Rev. J. M. Walker, her former pastor. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Pennington's Chapel near Corydon, Indiana.
