Rock and Roll Legends
Fats Domino & Ricky Nelson
performing a Dave Bartholomew classic

Dave Bartholomew was the multi-talented figure behind a majority of classic New Orleans R&B hits of the '50s. He was also the self-proclaimed inventor of the "Big Beat". The contributions he made are Immeasurable although most people will never mutter his name. As Talent Scout, Producer, Band Leader, Trumpet Player, and Songwriter he was a driving force in the New Orleans music scene. A few of his timeless production credits include recordings "Let The Good Times Roll" by Shirley & Lee, "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" by Lloyd Price, and almost all of the Fats Domino recordings. As Co-writers the Domino/Bartholomew duo scored more than 70 chart hits over a 13 years period.

It was in 1949, Bartholomew met Lew Chudd who was forming a new label, Imperial Records. Chudd hired Bartholomew as house arranger, bandleader, and talent scout. It was shortly after this that he made the acquaintance of another delta area music man, Antoine "Fats" Domino. With Domino He produced and co-wrote , "The Fat Man," and hit immediate pay-dirt as the single reached sales of one million plus. Bartholomew, with the Imperial label, began cranking out numerous hits through the '50s for Fats as well as Shirley & Lee, Smiley Lewis, Earl King, Chris Kenner, Tommy Ridgely, Frankie Ford, Robert Parker, and a host of others.

Other artists who have recorded Dave Bartholomew's songs, include Gale Storm, Elvis Presley, Pat Boone, Ricky Nelson, Chuck Berry, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Hank Williams Jr, Bob Seger, The Thunderbirds, Dave Edmunds, Cheap Trick, Elvis Costello, Joe Cocker and George Benson, to name a few. You'll also hear his songs in several motion picture soundtracks including "The Blues Brothers", "American Graffiti", and "The Girl Can’t Help It."

Staying with Imperial until the hits dried up in the mid-'60s, he then had short stays at Trumpet, Mercury, and his own Broadmoor label. Dave Bartholomew continued to work in the background for the next 25 years and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Now semi-retired, The Dave Bartholomew Big Band still shows up occasionally at music festivals here and abroad.
