Top events of 2004
I saw that the Associated Press came out with a list of the Top 10 events of 2004. Their list was:
1. US Election
2. Iraq
3. Florida Hurricanes
4. Abu Ghraib
5. 9/11 Attack Report
6. Gay Marriage issues
7. Arafat dies
8. Reagan dies
9. Belsen attack
10. 3/11 Attack (the Madrid bombings)
An organization called RFE/RL said today that it feels the top 10 were these events:
1. Ukraine election
2. Beslan Attack
3. US Election
4. Arafat Dies
5. Handing sovereignty to Iraq
6. Increase of EU's membership
7. 3/11 Attack
8. Dollarfall (fall of the dollar vs the euro and other currencies)
9. Darfur crisis
10. Olympics
This is quite a bit different. No mention of Reagan, Abu Ghraib, or gay marriage, and the Ukraine election is more important than the US one. In neither of these was it mentioned that crude oil has been increasing in price throughout the year. This is my top 10:
1. Ever increasing price of crude oil
2. US Election
3. Florida Hurricanes
4. Abu Ghraib
5. Iraq
6. Bush cleans out his cabinet
7. Arafat dies
8. 3/11 Attack
9. Beslen attack
10. Darfur crisis
This shows what I think was the real big story - oil. Furthermore, Bush's cleaning out his cabinet is a major story too - it seems he is replacing gadflies like Powell with yes men and women.
