Randolph Macon Women's College - Waugh!
Recently Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia decided to admit men. This was unpopular with many of the women that attend the college, as they explicitly applied to the college wanting an all-women school. But such women are becoming fewer and fewer, so the college felt that to stay in business they had to admit men. So now they are admitting men. If they are admitting men, what should they name the college? Can't name it a women's college any more.
The problem is that the obvious choice is out, namely Randolph Macon College. There already is such a college in Ashland, Virginia; in fact, the college was originally founded by women who could not get into all-male Randolph Macon College. And ways of getting around this will cause confusion: Randolph College, Mason College, Mason-Randolph College, and so forth.
Another way to name it may be by place. But I think there is already a Lynchburg College; besides such a name would be presumptuous, as there are other places of higher learning in Lynchburg. Maybe name it after the street the college is on. But this won't work. Norfolk College would cause massive confusion - people would think it is in Norfolk, Virginia. Rivermont College is a possibility, but it seems drab. Still, I think they are going to consider it. But there is absolutely no way this college will become Princeton University or even College. There can be only one Princeton, the one in New Jersey.
How about naming it after a person? The obvious choice is the founder, William Waugh Smith. But Smith College is too ordinary sounding. Besides, there already is a Smith College in Massachusetts. William College also sounds pallid, and the name could cause confusion with the College of William and Mary. But how about Waugh College? Waugh! What a name!
This could be the thing that rejuvenates the school after it admits men. Call it Waugh College. Wow! What a place! Undergraduates learn the things they need after college. Waugh! It is an unusually good environment, with woods and sidewalks and attractive buildings. Waugh! The teachers here are really great! Wow! All this could make a good advertisement, particularly for radio and television.
Maybe if there are men, the college would have a football team. We really would have some cheers then. The team could be called the Wows. Here come the Wows. Wow! Where are they from? Waugh. Wow! Who's going to win? Waugh! Waugh! Waugh! Waugh! And this would be a nice way to introduce statistics. Jordan Miller passed a record 217 yards today! Wow! Mark Johnson scored three times! Wow! And so forth.
So I think that this college, if it really wants a jump start as a coed institution of higher learning, should consider renaming itself Waugh College. What a name. Waugh!
A note. How do you pronounce Waugh? The references I have seen say pronounce it "waw". But how do you pronounce that? That could be pronounced the same as Wow! Some say pronounce it Woff. In that case, just change all these Wows to howls. Let the people of this college howl! Name the team the Wolves, and have them all howl at the games. That should help out Wolf, or rather, Waugh, College.
