JC Quilts Block of the Month

Finishing Your Quilt

Once you have completed all your blocks in the JC Quilts Block of the Month Club, you'll want to put them together to make a quilt. The instructions given here are just one way to finish your quilt. You may want to cut your borders and sashing wider, or you may want to combine blocks from 2 Block of the Month Clubs to make a larger quilt.

These instructions produce a quilt approximately 71" by 56".

You'll need these supplies:

straight edge, rotary cutter, cutting mat

You'll need this fabric:

4 yards by 44" backing fabric
3 yards by 44" sashing fabric
2 yards by 44" binding fabric
Six completed 3½" foundation blocks

Cutting the Fabric:

The Sashing

Cut fourteen 6½" by 12½" strips
Cut seventeen 12½" by 3½" strips
Cut four 6½" by 6½" squares
Cut ten 6½" by 3½" strips

Note: For contrast, you may want to use a different color fabric for the 6½" by 6½" squares and the 6½" by 3½" strips.

The Binding fabric

Cut the binding fabric into 5" wide strips

The Backing

Cut the fabric into two 44" by 72" pieces

Use ¼ inch seam allowances unless otherwise specified. Cut along the grain of the fabric. Always cut the largest pieces first.

Preparing the Backing Fabric

1. Sew the two pieces of backing fabric together. Use a " seam. The resulting block should be about 84" by 82". Set aside.

Sashing

2. Lay out the 12" quilt blocks, three across by four down, in the order in which you want them in your finished quilt. The blocks are numbered in the illustration to the right for convenience of referring to the blocks.

3. Sew a 12½" by 3½" strip to the bottom edge of blocks 1 through 9.

4. Sew a 3½" foundation block to the bottom of a 12½" by 3½" strip. Repeat to make 6 similar strips.

5. Sew a strip with a small block to the right side of blocks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8.

6. Sew a plain strip (without a small block) to the right side of blocks 10 and 11.

7. Sew blocks 1, 2, and 3 together.

8. Sew blocks 4, 5, and 6 together.

9. Sew blocks 7, 8, and 9 together.

10. Sew blocks 10, 11, and 12 together.

11. Sew the four rows of blocks together, matching the seams as you go.

TIP: When possible, to help with matching the seams, finger press the seam of the strip on the top toward the sewing machine, and the seam of the strip on the bottom towards you. As the fabric travels under the presser foot, the two seams will be pushed together.

The Border

1. Sew together a 6½" by 12½" strip and a 6½" by 3½" strip. Repeat to make 10 identical strips.

2. Sew two of these strips to make a longer strip. Add a 6½" by 12½" to the end of the strip. Repeat to make an identical strip.

3. Sew together three of the strips you created in step 12. Add a 6½" by 12½" to the end of the strip. Repeat to make an identical strip.

4. Add a 6½" by 6½" square to each end of the longer strips.

5. Sew a shorter strip to the top and bottom of the quilt top, matching seams as you go.

6. Sew the longer strips to the sides of the quilt to, matching seams as you go.
