Cut fabric pieces large enough to cover the numbered area, plus ¼" on each side for seam allowance. The pieces need not be the exact shape of the numbered area, but make sure you have included plenty of seam allowance.
Sew along the lines, with the fabric on the unprinted side of the paper.
Use small stitches. (The paper is easier to remove later if you use tiny stitches.)
2. Place the third piece of fabric right side down over the area marked "3," making sure you have at least ¼" overlapping the line. You can hold the foundation up to the light to help you place the fabric in the right place, or you can use the following method.
Fold foundation paper along the line between the area where you'll already added fabric and the next area. Trim the attached fabric to ¼" beyond this folded line. Unfold paper. Using the trimmed edge of the attached fabric as a guide, lay the next fabric piece over the attached piece, right sides together. Place fabric side down under the presser foot and sew along the line between the two areas. Again, trim seam to ¼" if needed. Turn the new fabric piece out and finger press. Fold along line between attached fabric and the next area and trim fabric ¼" .
3. Continue to add each piece as described above. Make sure the fabric pieces on the outside are long enough to overlap the outside dashed line on the paper.
4. Baste around the block, between the dashed border and the solid border, then trim entire block along dashed outside border of paper.
5. It is often helpful to leave the paper attached until the block is added to the quilt. If you leave the paper attached, you can see where the seam line should go. Once the foundation block is sewn into you quilt, carefully remove the paper. Use a seam ripper to gently lift the paper away from the sewn lines.
