Artist Statement

line

For much of my photographic work, I prefer using higher contrast techniques or infrared film to showcase the body or subject, either still or in motion, set against a dark background. This technique enhances the glowing ethereal look of the model's skin or the flowers' petals; like a translucent effervescence floating out of the darkness. Although a 22-year veteran of the photographic arts, it was not until quite recently that I made the decision to show my work publicly.

Originally hailing from the East Coast, I have lived in Oakland my entire 21 years of residence in California. I have exhibited in a variety of locations throughout the East Bay and California, including the Esteban Sabar Gallery, the Studio One Arts Center, the North Valley Art League Carter House Gallery, and the Joyce Gordon Gallery.

ORIGINAL SKIN SERIES:

Society has long held the belief that the female form is the accepted standard of beauty and that the male nude form is often censored and very controversial. My intention is to begin to break the long held stereotype which reflects the views of a male dominated world aesthetic. I invite the viewer to see the male nude form as strong, yet vulnerable, beautiful and sensual, possessing a singular muscularity while remaining graceful.

Even as I acknowledge the gender-based politics inherent in my chosen subject, my true hope is that the viewer will be able to look beyond the cultural confines of iconic beauty and appreciate the unique beauty that is the male form.

TERRA AND AQUA SERIES:

In these series', I have attempted to bring the viewer closer in to the subject, nearly to abstraction at times, in the hope that they, too, will be able to truly see the commonly missed details of our natural world. I have often played with the notion of transition and decay. I'd prefer the viewer determine for themselves whether the photo is a thing of beauty and wonder or something strangely curious instead.

STILL, LIFE SERIES:

Since I was a young girl, I have always been fascinated with dioramas like the ones seen at a science museum. When I first started this series, it was with these in mind. As I continued, it began to morph into something else and took on a different life altogether - with more of a nod to the style of painting commonly practiced in 18th century France called trompe l'oeil, which interestingly enough is described as a style of painting that gives the illusion of photographic reality.
