Xmas Day 2000 Solar Eclipse

  Lunar Movies

By Ed Abel (Who Else?)
The images below were made by Ed Abel on the night of March 22/23 2002. Each movie consists of multiple frames of the same Lunar region. First frame gives a full disc with highlighted square to show where the feature is. Subsequent frames document how detail changes with lighting conditions through the Lunar month.

Active Region Tracking Project "The Movie"

Cinematographer: Ed Abel / Producer: John Settle

Explanation of What You Are Seeing Below

Here is a distillation of Ed's recent active region (sunspot) tracking project. For details on each image in the movie and more, see the detailed study later on this page. Movie consists of 8 stills made 2/09 through 2/19; see the end sequence of a repeating replay of the 16th and 17th. Ed has created a "Blink Comparator" of two images of the same two sunspots one day apart. This makes the changes in sunspot structure over time readily apparent.  Note here how the lower spot dramatically changes as the upper spot remains the same. Camera, telescope and filter details are gone into later on this page in the "Solar Studies: AR Tracking Project" section. Ed prepared a second movie of the sun's full disk images covering the same time period. The areas imaged at hign magnification are indicated by the floating rectangle.
