Who is this white man, and
what is he doing in front of me? I lead the Joe Kamau
by a step somewhere between 4 and 5 miles into the New Haven 20K,
September 2, 1996. He is about (guessing) 5'2" to my 6'4".
He sees me as a familiar face, having introduced himself once
last year, but also as an oddity. Other photos revealed the puzzling
looks he was giving me most of the first few miles. He easily
pulled away right around 5 miles, hitting 10K in 28:55, and leaving
me to fight the wind by myself. I ended up second in 59:37 to
his 58:33, but almost didn't pull that off, as Daniel Kithara
ran with me from 8 to 10 miles. After 10, you make a turn and
that same wind was at your back, ushering you to the finish.
