AM: 4.55 mile loop, plus one lap salmons hollow. Lately, I’ve been picking up cans when I go running. So much so that now I carry a plastic bag with me to hold them all. Every morning I come back with 3-12 cans. We have a bottle bill here in CT, so I go redeem them. It’s messy work, but I think it’s important. You’ve got to get those cans as soon as they hit the ground; otherwise they become part of the landscape. It’s pretty sick how many I find. I don’t like doing it at all. I wish I could punish those who carelessly toss their garbage out along my street, but I can’t. I just have to take it. I think the bottle bill should have each can be worth like, 50 cents of even a dollar. That will never happen, but I can dream of a world where it did. I can’t imagine people paying, like, $30 for a case of cola. But that’s what it would take to change people’s behavior. I read a recent study indicating that gasoline would have to cost $2.83 a gallon before people would change their driving habits. Economic incentive is the only way to curb people’s bad behavior. I’m thinking I’ll ask my state senator if he can raise the bottle bill to 10 cents a can. It won’t change the condition of my street, but you have to take what you can get. |
