Age: 16 to 25 Hiked_Alone_CommentsHiking alone allows me to set my own pace without feeling guilty about affecting another person's speed. I also enjoy stopping to admire a flower, dip my feet in a river, take a break in a patch of sun or watch the clouds on a bald. I do a lot of thinking in the woods and am able to make important life decisions. However, I usually hike with a partner (my husband) and find equally as many positives about that experience as well. AMC_Hut_CommentsI stayed as a thru-hiker so my experience was different from most in that I slept on the floor, ate leftovers and did work for stay. That said, they are a wonderful option for hikers and treat thru-hikers pretty well. I would certainly go back. Why_Favorite_or_WorstI met my husband while hiking the Appalachian Trail. I couldn't have asked for a better reward.
Age: 16 to 25 Hiked_Alone_CommentsIt's the purest solitude I can find. AMC_Hut_CommentsWhy_Favorite_or_Worst
Age: 36 to 45 Hiked_Alone_CommentsHave climbed alone many times. I have enjoyed it, and the best part is that you can keep your own preferred pace, whether moderate, quick, or lightning. There is surely an increase in safety factor when climbing with another person. I think two is best. AMC_Hut_Comments
Why_Favorite_or_WorstIn the Adirondacks in the fog on a humid day, two of us bushwhacked three peaks fighting collapsing snow, unbelievably dense fir trees, scaling moderate ledges in very steep terrain with an unintentional bivouc. Took us 31 hours to climb Panther, Couchascraga, and Santanoni. We are members of the 46-Rs. What a tough trip that was! Favorite & Worst.
Age: 56 or more Hiked_Alone_CommentsHave not done it yet, but injury could be a problem if hiking alone. AMC_Hut_CommentsGenerally good, but lots of snoring. Bring ear plugs! Why_Favorite_or_WorstWhiteface-varied terrain, and excellent views Tripyramids-very steep with very poor footing, and no views!
