Starling & Herl (bead head)

Tied by FlyFishermanJ

Hook:       Dia-Riki 135(12-16)
Thread:     Whatever you prefer
Bead:        Gold/black/copper
Hackle:     Starling
Body:       Peacock Herl

Instructions:

This is a fly I never leave home without and it is a simple tie.  It is simply a starling & herl soft hackle that I tie on a scud hook with a bead.  I also never leave home without a non-beaded version.  I have found some peacock dubbing that I’ve replaced the herl with, makes the fly very durable.  You fish this fly in the riffles or the head of the pool.  Swing it or dead-drift, both work very well.

Tan Caddis Larva

Tied by FlyFishermanJ

Hook: Mustad nymph 12-14
Thread: Whatever you prefer
Weight: Med. Copper wire
Body: Tan Dubbing
Legs: Partridge hackle
Head: Dark hare's mask

Instructions:

I use copper wire instead of lead.  I use colored wire because if you dub light enough it gives the fly a two-tone look.  I also don’t trim the legs on this pattern.  I found that the fly works well trimmed or not, so I omitted that step.  I fish this pattern in the riffles or at the head of the pool.  You can dead-drift or swing it, both will catch fish!
