Melvin Giles

Born in Texarkana, Texas, Mel Giles moved with his family to Chicago's Near North Side when he was three years old. He graduated from Lane Tech High School then went to work as a printer for three years before he was inducted into the Army. Honorably discharged after his tour of duty he returned to his printing job.
He began evening courses in 1970 and in 1973 he gained an Associates Degree from Morton College, in Cicero, Illinois. That same year he began his first job in computer programming and during a 20 year career worked his way up to Project Manager. Continuing his education he gained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1990, from Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Retiring in 1993, Mr. Giles wrote his first book after years of writing poetry and short stories. A novel, entitled "George Street, Our Street: A Poor Family's Richest Years in Chicago", the book is based on his family's true experiences during the Depression, WWII, and the Korean War. His second book is "Bits and Pieces", an exquisite volume of his evocative poems. “Ordinary Men, Unforgettable Women” is his latest book, a volume of short stories about interesting people he has encountered, some who also may be familiar to you.
Mr. Giles now lives in Caulfield, Missouri with his wife, Marge, an accomplished artist. In addition to writing and publishing, he keeps busy tending forty acres, playing country music, and getting involved with local politics and classic car clubs.
