The SMITHs, originally from Herfordshire, England, belonged to the Anglican Church of England. Their births, baptisms, and deaths are recorded in the Church Records of St. Mary Magdeleneís, Woolwich and of St. James, Hereford, England.

As a child, Williams George Smith moved to Canada with his mother, Sarah Smith, and siblings, Charles Henry and Edith Lillian. During his late teens, William converted to Catholicism, wanting to study theology and join the priesthood. For whatever reason, this failed to happened, but William and his family remained in the Catholic Church.
