Nos encontramos dentro de un hotel prestigioso en la cuidad de Hollywood, California. Dentro de la misma ciudad en donde muchos sueñan convertirse en estrellas. No hace mucho tiempo, Gael Garcia Bernal empezó su carera en el teatro en Guadalajara, actuando con sus papas. A los doce años estreno en la telenovela "El Abuelo y Yo". Acaba de terminar sus estudios en la escuela de discurso y drama Londres, y ahora se encuentra en Hollywood, promoviendo su primer película "Amores Perros", una de las más importantes cintas que ha exportado México. Es en su habitación donde MundoRockero se encontró con Gael, con su playera de Bruce Lee y sus blue jeans, estilo brit-rock.... We find ourselves in a prestigious hotel in Hollywood, California. In the same city where many are dreaming of becoming stars. Not long ago, Gael Garcia Bernal began his career in a theater in Guadalajara, acting with his parents. At 12 years of age he debuted in the telenovela El Abuelo y Yo. He has just finished his studies at the school of speech and drama in London, and now he’s in Hollywood, promoting his first movie Amores Perros, one of the most important films that Mexico has exported. In his room where Mundo Rockero meets Gael, with his Bruce Lee t-shirt and brit-rock style blue jeans . . .

MR~ ¿Qué es el Amor Perro? MR~ What is Amor Perro?
Gael~ En la película los perros se manejan como metáfora de las vidas... paralelas a los humanos. Una persona enamorada se comporta como perro... todo amor es un amor perro. Gael~ In the movie dogs are used as a metaphor for our lives . . . parallel to the humans. A person in love acts like a dog . . . all love is dog love.
MR~ ¿Cómo te sentiste cuando la película fue nominada por el premio Oscar? El mejor prestigio que hay para una película? MR~ How did you feel when the picture was nominated for the Oscar? Is this the best prize a movie can get?
Gael~ Bueno, es el mejor en los Estados Unidos. La película empezó en Cannes y gano en Cannes, donde, en realidad para una película es mayor éxito... gano en Cannes, y ya, ya esta, lo demás era como betún del pastel... y el azúcar también. Obviamente era una película que nunca pensé que iba a ganar el Oscar. Es una película que no se ve muy Oscarisable, sobre todo para mejor película extranjera porque, las que siempre ganan son... Gael~ Well, it’s the best in the United States. The movie started in Cannes and won there, where, really, for a movie it's the biggest success . . . it won in Cannes and now, now this, all the rest was like the icing on the cake . . . and the sugar too. Obviously it was a movie that I never thought was going to win the Oscar. It’s a picture that doesn’t seem very Oscarizable, above all for the best foreign movie, because the ones which always win are . . .

Gael~ Películas así como que las produjeran la secretaria de turismo... y aquí [Amores Perros] es una película obscura, que la tenían que nominar o vieran quedado muy mal. Es una película que ha ganado en todo el mundo... por lo menos la nominaron pero obviamente no iba ganar. Yo no esperaba que iba ganar- Que iba a ganar "Crouching Tiger" claro, si porque aquí en los Estados Unidos es lo que se premia- la industria Americana, la película es gabacha, producida por dinero [americano]. Gael~ Movies like those that are produced by the secretary of tourism . . . and here [Amores Perros] is a dark movie, which they had to nominate or they would be seen in a bad light. It’s a picture that has won throughout the world
. . . at least they nominated it but obviously it was not going to win. I didn’t think it was going to win — that Crouching Tiger was going to win, sure, because here in the United States what gets the prize — the American industry, the picture is Anglo, produced with American money.
MR~ ¿Cuándo estaba la película en producción pensabas que iba llegar a este nivel? MR~ When the movie was in production, did you think it would get to this level?
Gael~ Si, bueno, no tanto de los premios pero que era una buena película, si, sabíamos que iba ser una buena película. Gael~ Yes, well, not so many prizes, but that it was a good movie, yes, we knew that it was going to be a good movie.
MR~ Sobre el cine mexicano, ¿esta en la frente de una revolución cinemática? Ósea, hace tres años México produjo solamente siete películas. MR~ Regarding Mexican films, are we facing a cinematic revolution? That is, three years ago Mexico only produced seven films.
Gael~ Pues ahora, tanto así que este año se han producido treinta. Van a ver sesenta a fines de ano. En tres anos es un avance impresionante. La gente esta ansiosa de ver películas de México, hechas en español. Que sean de España, que sean de Argentina, la gente esta ansiosa de ver películas. En la película, pues si, es como un- marca una pausa de lo que se tiene que hacer, de lo que hay que seguir en el cine mexicano. La gente esta inspirada la moral esta muy alta. Hay que seguir haciendo- la gente quiere seguir haciendo y se están produciendo muchas películas. El resultado final no se va ver aquí a dos anos, o tres anos que vamos a poder hablar de seis o siente películas-   Gael~ Well now, so much so that this year thirty have been produced. You are going to see sixty at the end of the year. In three years this is an impressive advance. People are anxious to see Mexican films, made in Spanish. Whether they come from Spain, Argentina, people are anxious to see films. In the movie, well yes, it’s like a — it marks a break from what you have to do, from what must be followed in Mexican cinema. People are inspired. Morale is very high. You have to keep doing — people want to keep doing it and many films are being produced. The final result won’t be seen two years from now, or three years, but we are going to be able to talk about six or seven films.
MR~ -que sean aclamadas-   MR~ That should be acclaimed —
Gael~ de exportación, que sean buenas para el mundo, que se vean en todo el mundo, no-solo localistas. Que viajen, que vivan a rededor del mundo. Gael~ For export, they should be good for the world, should be seen by everyone, not just locals. They should travel, live around the world.
MR~ ¿Qué tienes en común con el personaje de Octavio? MR~ What do you have in common with the character of Octavio?
Gael~ La forma de amar. Gael~ The way of loving.
MR~ ¿De amar? MR~ Of loving?
Gael- Si porque yo también me pongo muy bruto cuando amo. Gael~ Yes because I also become very wild when I love.
<risas> [laughter]
MR~ Cómo todos! MR~ Like everybody!
Gael~ Bien baboso, hago una cantidad de cosas... Gael~ Pretty stupid, I do a lot of things . . .
<risas> [laughter]
Gael~ Si, creo que todos. Es normal. Pero, yo creo que manejaría las cosas de distinta manera. Pero de todos modos- no sé, persona que también soy yo. Gael~ Yes, I think everybody. It’s normal. But I believe that I would handle things differently. But in any case — I don’t know, someone who is also like me.
MR~ ¿Cuales son tus proyectos futuros?   MR~ What are your future projects?

Gael~ Bueno, horita estoy filmando una película en Argentina con Fito Páez, él dirige, y luego me voy a España a filmar una película que se llama "Y Tu Mama también". Y después voy a viajar mucho, a divertirme.

Gael~ Well, right now I’m filming a movie in Argentina with Fito Páez, he’s directing, and then I’m going to Spain to film a movie that will be called And Your Mama Too [Y tu mama también]. And after that I’m going to travel a lot, to have fun.
