 Blogging as journalism
This article discusses the role that web logs have taken on over recent years and months. The article indicates that the media covers mainstream events with a single [unobjective] opinion. However, with blogs, anyone can share thoughts and images on any subject. It indicates that some of the mainstream media are concerned about the integrity or quality of this journalism. I have to say that I don't think people are trying to be journalists, they are just trying to express themselves and share their thoughts and experiences. I know that is my intention with my blog. And in case nobody else has noticed, the media in the US is not exactly journalism any more either. It has become so one sided and unobjective, that I no longer rely on it for my information. I don't know about the press in other places besides the US, but I know that this is not a valid concern or complaint here at home.

Happy New Years everyone!!!

 Back On My Soap Box
I guess I'm in a ranting kind of mood today. However, I can blame my brother, Bob, for this rant. When we received his Christmas wish list, it had several movies and CD's on it and he explicitly stated he did not want them from Amazon.com. We heeded his wishes and did not use Amazon. It wasn't until he came over on Christmas eve that I was able to ask him about it. Basically, he is frustrated for a couple of reasons. One, Amazon will under cut all the competition even if it means losing money to get customers. Being a huge company, they can take the short time hit of selling something so cheap better than a Mom and Pop or smaller store. Secondly, they give horrible customer service. People will go to other places to get information on products, then buy from Amazon. Then when something goes wrong later and Amazon won't help them, they come back to the Mom and Pops asking for help. My brother sees this a lot as he works for Tool King. Finally, I think he felt that they are just another huge company that only cares about the bottom dollar, now their employees or customers. So, I've joined my brother in the boycott of Amazon even if it costs me a couple more bucks here and there to get something. They just don't practice good business so I'm not going to support them any more. I guess I will become an eBay junkie now. ;)

 Americans
With the election in the past months and now the horrible tsunami, it has me thinking a lot about Americans and how we are different from other people around the rest of the world. I feel most (by the election results any ways) Americans vote their wallet and their sense of morality. And in most cases, it is all about me and I'm better than you. The American news channels keep harping on the number of Americans that died in the tsunami (it was 20 when I heard there were only 59,000 dead) when that was just a tiny drop in the larger bucket.

This article really shows the difference between many Americans and our fellow citizens in other countries. Currently the NHL is on strike and it is all about money and what have you done for me lately. I don't know that we will see any kind of action like these athletes have taken in the rest of the world which really makes me sad and angry.

I guess it is time to put my money where my mouth is and try to help out all the victims of this disaster...

Christmas Recap & New Years Preview
Santa and my family were VERY good to me this year. A few of the more interesting items that I want to mention that I will be blogging about more in the future:
  • My parents bought me a PRISMIQ Media Player and wireless keyboard

  • The kids bought me a Ximeta 80GB NetDisk Network Attached Storage

  • My brother and his wife bought me Star Wars Battlefront (this game rocks!)

  • Suzanne bought me a couple of DVDs (Tommy and X2 X-Men United) and Return of the King for my PS2

  • I received several CD's from my wife, brother, and sister-in-law including No Doubt: The Singles, Jewel: 0304, Alanis Morissette: So Called Chaos, and Avril Lavigne: Under My Skin.

  • I will be discussing many of these items in detail of the coming days and possibly weeks but tons of great stuff!!!

     Christmas
This is far to close to reality in our home. The kids are SOOOO excited for christmas. I know when we went over to my parents on the 12th, Lindsay kept asking Grandma if we could open presents. Just add 10 more days on top of that and you get this:

     Grrrr!
This is one of those things that makes me scratch my head and then makes me angry the more I think about it. Why does it matter what sex you are for a job? Why can't it be your qualifications? I don't think athletics should be any different than any other workplace.

     Virtual goods
I guess I'm just out of the loop as I don't understand why anyone would pay $26,500 for an island that is only make believe. I sure hope he makes his money back on this. Get off your couches people and get out into the real world!

     Missing Blog Posts
I've had a few things on my mind lately that I was going to blog about but have not gotten around to it. They include:
  • Photo printers - I saw an article recently that says you can cheaper higher quality prints doing them yourselves with a good printer. I'm thinking this is something I would like long term. That is if I don't get digital picture frames first where I can easily change photos. However, this doesn't help me distribute photos to friends and family members unless they get them too!

  • Sophomore albums - I've been thinking lately that so many bands have great first albums but their next ones are not near the quality. I compare this to the sophomore jinx in baseball, basketball or football. My theory on this is they think there is some magic formula they discovered while doing their first album and are too afraid to deviate or be themselves the next time around. They loose any inspiration or creativity they previously had. This is what separates mediocre bands from the good ones, and the good bands from the great ones. Some of the bands that experience this jinx finally get back to what made their first one so good but others never recapture it. I could go on and on about this...

  • Christmas Letter - I've never been one to do a Christmas letter but have been thinking it would be nice. I think before the year is over I will post one on my blog.

  • Internet proxy server at work - We got a new proxy server work that is making my life miserable. I can no longer run MS Money, upload images to my blog, or depend on good performance. For those of you that don't don't know, a proxy server is meant to sit between you and the internet and help boost performance by cacheing frequently used URLs and web pages. I know our IT guy Steve, also my Moab driver, is working on it but I'm ready to ditch it! I don't complain at work about it because it is not effecting my job (yet).

     Road Rage
I'm so angry and somebody has to pay but unfortunately I don't have a name, number, description, or license plate number. I'm hoping by venting (some more) through my blog that it might help me feel better. This has been one of those weeks, and it is only Wednesday, where I wish I didn't own a car. Monday morning I was greeted with rush hour on top of several inches of snow. Believe it or not, this was one of the quickest commutes of the week. Tuesday AM, when the roads were 100% dry, there was an accident which turned my normal 30 minute commute into an hour. Wednesday AM, there was another accident on C470 that increased my normal commute to 45 minutes. The icing on the cake was my commute home tonight. Normally I cut through Morrison by Red Rocks on 26 and 93. However, if I leave work after 6:00, I usually just take I-70 to C470 as it will be a little quicker because traffic has thinned out. I left work today at 6:15 or 6:20 so I went straight to C470. Well, C470 was very backed up. It took me five minutes alone to get from the on-ramp onto C470. It took me 45 minutes to travel the next 2 miles. It was about an 1.25 hours for my total commute. Ahhh! I can't wait until my work relocates closer to my home (most sane people move closer to work, I'm waiting for the reverse to happen) so that I can ride my bike to work. Technically I could ride to work now except that it is 30 miles one way and it would be a huge climb uphill on the way to work and would take me over an 1.5 hours. However, it would give me an excuse to buy a road bike though. Hmmm, maybe I should consider commuting by bicycle.
