 Adios Amigo
One of my coworkers and friend, Mark Groves is leaving CSS after four and a half years. Mark is moving the family up to Redmond, Washington to go work for the man as a PM on Visual Studio. It will be a great opportunity for Mark but he will be missed at CSS. Mark helped bring formal software design, unit testing and test driven development, system builds, and many other improvements to our software development life cycle. It will be interesting to read his blog though and hear about his experiences at Microsoft. Best of luck to him and his family!

 Daddy Days Of Summer
Daddy days of summer are not to be confused with the dog days of summer. The kids are into their third week of tracking off which means that we have to find alternate arrangements for them until school resumes. So the past two Mondays have been Daddy Days (Thursday's have been Mommy Days). Last Monday, the big event was hiking at Deer Creek Canyon. The kids got to use the Camelbaks they got for their birthdays which is a lot of fun. Other items of note from the day included:
  • Alex was the Deer Champion as he saw the most deer.

  • Lindsay was the Cactus Champion as she saw the most cactus.

  • I was the Poison Oak Champion as I saw the most poison oak. Luckily, none of us got into any of it!

Yesterday for Daddy Day we went to the Denver Zoo. It was a cheap day as we have an annual membership and we took drinks (Camelbaks again) and our own snacks. We didn't go until later in the afternoon as we got stuck at home waiting for the replacement blinds to arrive and get installed. We hit Schlotzsky's for lunch before heading out. It was an awesome Colorado day for the zoo as it wasn't too hot and not a could in the sky. Which reminds me, I have not ridden much lately, about once per week, but did get out once last week. I was riding at the land that belongs to the Mt. Venon Country Club close by to my work and was just blown away. It was probably the perfect riding day as it was about 62 and not a cloud in the sky. Man I love Colorado!

 Odd Names
Staff and researchers at the Cornwall Record Office compiled a list of more than 1,000 unusual names found in censuses as well as in births, deaths and marriage records going back as far as the 16th century. Some of the odd names included Horatio Hornblower, Boadicea Basher, Philadelphia Bunnyface, Faithful Cock, Susan Booze, Elizabeth Disco, Edward Evil, Fozzitt Bonds, Truth Bullock, Charity Chilly, Gentle Fudge, Obedience Ginger and Offspring Gurney. What is so odd about Bullock? ;) (article)

 Fancy Restaurant
Last night our realtor took the entire family out to a fancy restaurant. as a thank you for our business and to celebrate the new house. He suggested that we go to Gabriel's in Sedalia (south on Santa Fe between our house and Castle Rock). Suzanne and I have never been brave enough to take the kids out to a nice restaurant so we were apprehensive to say the least. We were also worried that they would not have anything the kids, especially Alex, would like to eat. We actually took lunchables with us just in case things did not go well. It turns out that all of our worrying was wasted as the kids were on their best behavior all night long and both found something to eat as well! Lindsay had the Fettuccini Alfredo and Alex had the Chicken Parmesan. Lindsay even tried some of Suzanne's duck appetizer and liked it. BTW, Suzanne and I had been to Gabriel's once before about 4 years ago for our anniversary and enjoyed it very much. We were just as pleased with our dinner and service again tonight. I think we will not wait another four years before we go again!

This moring when I got to work I went to talk to a coworker who has a child that is in the same day care as Alex and Lindsay. She asked how our fancy dinner was but I knew that I didn't tell her about it. Turns out that Lindsay told her daughter all about it yesterday morning. I guess she was just little bit excited!

 Tidbits Too
Sorry about the cornball title (kind of). I wanted to follow up on a couple of items from my last post.

  • It was a big shock to me but we had a voice message from somebody at the post office and apparently they gave me the wrong keys to the mail box so they gave us new ones that actually worked. :P

  • I was able to contact APA Marketing and once I sent them photos of the wrong chair base, we had a brand new one at the house within a couple of days for no charge. Excellent customer service!

  • The gal that did the blinds called me today and said the new blinds will be in at the end of the week. She asked if there were business hours they could install the blinds and I told her that either Monday, I'm off, or Thursday, Suzanne is off, would work. She said that we would be first or last of the day so that we could enjoy our days off. Very considerate!

  • The dog got to come home to his new house. He seems happy but was definitely off the first couple of days. The first morning he was there, he waited for me to go downstairs because I'm not sure he knew how to get down there without me! Normally, he can't get downstairs fast enough and was fine the other mornings.

  • I vacuumed the house for the first time last night. Previously, we had too many boxes and other items from the move cluttering up the house. One draw back to the bigger house is that it is going to take a lot longer to vacuum.

 Tidbits
Sorry about the long silence and lack of posts to the blog but it has been a busy time moving into the new house. A few items of note:

  • We closed on the new house on Friday the 25th and started moving stuff that day. We went out to dinner that night to a new restaurant called Tamale Kitchen. We were impressed with the food and decided that we would be willing to go back. However, Saturday morning Suzanne felt awful and later that day I got to feeling very bad. I wasn't able to eat at all on Saturday and was in bed at 8:00 PM. Sunday was only marginally better so I went to the doctor on Monday and he suspected food poisoning. I guess we won't be going back after all.

  • Very little damage occurred to the items we moved or the house!

  • PODS delivered and picked up the pod when promised. This is an excellent way to go and helped us so we were not moving all of our stuff two times!

  • We received our furniture delivery from American Furniture Warehouse a day late because they set us up for delivery a week after we wanted it. However, they did comp us half of the delivery charge ($75) so make up for the error.

  • Qwest messed up again and the home phone didn't work as promised until they came out and fixed their problem. Note to self, start shopping for new local phone service providers.

  • Comcast came and installed the digital cable, HDTV cable (for the new TV), and high speed internet. This company is on the ball and was able to handle requests on the fly. I'm a big fan!

  • You never notice your garage door opener until you don't have one or it is broken. The first couple of days without the opener was a pain but we have a nice quiet one (Chamberlain Whisper Drive) installed now!

  • Our first visitor at the new house was a little frog that Suzanne was not happy to see but the kids really loved. Good thing Alex won a butterfly net last Easter as the little bugger was hard to catch without it!

  • I actually have an office and work area now!

  • The fence in the back yard was installed the first weekend we moved in and looks great.

  • We have picked our landscaper, American Design & Landscape, and they are scheduled to start work in about two weeks. We liked their design, professionalism, and pricing!

  • I have not been able to ride much lately. I rode one day the week of the move, and only two days (yesterday with the kids!), since we moved in. The other ride was a solo ride at Waterton Canyon. I was amazed how strong I was but my computer broke half way through the ride so I have not stats to prove I was any faster or slower.

  • The Ryland Warranty rep suggested that we get a washer pan to put under the washing machine in the laundry area, just in case especially as it is upstairs. Good thing as the old hoses were leaking and dumped a bunch of water that was entirely contained in the pan. We emptied the pan and replaced the hoses so we are none the worse for wear and tear!

  • I finally found out how to get the keys for the new mailbox and picked them up on Thursday. Only problem was they did not work so I had to go back and listen to them question my intelligence on if I tried to open the right mailbox. We are waiting for new working keys (again) so we have not received our mail in over a week.

  • I previously posted about the new table and chairs we bought for the kitchen nook from a consignment store. Everything looked great until I tried assembling them. One of the chair bases does not match the other three and will not work so I'm in the process of working directly with the manufacturer to try to get what we need so we can have four working chairs!

  • Two sets of the blinds that were installed were not correct. The company that does the blinds realized one of them before we did and brought out a new one to correct it. The bad thing was the replacement was wrong too. We also noticed another one they missed so they are corrected it as well. Although wrong, the company is not fighting or resisting us and is eager to please and get it fixed ASAP.

  • I accosted one of the construction workers one morning when the power went out and I caught him farting around the power box behind my house (I thought I caught him with the smoking gun). Turns out it was the entire area so I apologized several times to him.
