I feel like I have done this post a time or two before. I still recall the first MLB opening day that I took off from work and set the wheels in motion for a 14 year tradition. It was April 1993 and I called in sick to work so that I could watch the Rockies first game. I was blinded by love and the new toy that was the Rockies. I was so baseball starved, just like the rest of the state. 1995 was the pinnacle of Rockies success in terms of winning. We managed to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card team but had to play one of the many dominating Atlanta Braves teams that had the excellent (starting) pitching (Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz...). Those were the days of the Blake Street Bombers (Walker, Castilla, Bichette, Galaraga...). The Rockies tasted success so went and spent a small fortune on (some very questionable) pitching that turned out a bust. Management decided to go skimpy after getting burned for at least $150 million. So they basically have an eternal youth movement coming through the club house. Once you get established and start playing well, you will be let go or traded off during the playoff push (obviously for the push is for teams BESIDES the Rockies). The only exception to this has been Todd Helton and the Rocks only held on to him for so long because Todd is a fan favorite. However, even Todd isn't safe any more. If the Rockies had not asked for the stars and the moon from Boston, Todd would be wearing an evil Red Sox uniform this year. If you can't tell yet, I'm not exactly a fan of the Rockies management. However, there is a little note at the bottom of the article about today's opening day failure that states that Dan O'Dowd and Clint Hurdle both had their contracts renewed throw 2009. So, unfortunately, we can expect more mediocre baseball. Unfortunately, Todd Helton is too good of a player for another team not to come knocking. However, I'm not sure the Rockies will ever feel compensated for him meaning the trigger may never get pulled. Regardless, as long as the Rocks keep pulling in the fans, they have no reason to change their behavior so I wouldn't be holding your breath.
