John R. Salomone's Recent Updates

05-14-2007 It's been a long time since the last update, again, but another arrival warrants the effort. Julia Laura Salomone was born on May 8, 2007 at around 3:30pm. She was even bigger than her brother, weighing in at 8 pounds, 13 ounces. She was 20 3/4 inches at birth.

Nancy's mother, Sherry, has been staying with us, to help us make the transition to a family of four. She's been a big help, and probably a large part of the reason that we're as well rested as we are. Julia has been a very good baby so far, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that she'll be as easy as her brother has been.

We've uploaded a few pictures of her, too.

02-27-2005 Well, it's been a long time since the last update, but the new development definitely warrants communication. Our first child, Marco John Salomone, was born at 10:45pm on Thursday, February 17, 2005. He was 8 pounds, 9 ounces, and 21 inches long at birth and he's growing like a weed. It was nice to finally meet the young fellow. He was 11 days overdue, so Nancy was getting a little aggravated for the little rascal to join the rest of the world.

Since he was born, we have been working on making the adjustment to a three person family after years of it just being the two of us. We spent two and a half days in the hospital enjoying having a full staff of medical professionals on hand to change diapers and take care of Nancy as she recovered from the ordeal of delivering Marco.

Since we all returned home, things have been going pretty well. Marco seems to be a pretty well behaved young man. After a week at home, we have not yet tried to kill one another, so I think that's probably a good sign. <-8

We have uploaded a few pictures of him, too.

06-17-2002  Ed is so huge. He is a little bit bigger than Larry at this point. He is right around 60 pounds now! What a big boy!

Nancy and I took a trip recently to Northern California for a friend's wedding. It was really fun. We spent some time on the American River and on the Rubicon River. It was nice being in the blazing California heat. We both got a good head-start on our Summer tans!

I sold the Z. That was disappointing. But, we used the proceeds to install new banisters on the front stairs, so that has been a nice treat.

03-07-2002  We got a new puppy. A yellow labrador named Ed. Ed was born on Christmas. He is now 10 weeks old. We'll be uploading pictures of Ed soon!

On an odd note, Emil moved back to California after spending four months here in Colodaro jobless.

12-10-2001  Thanksgiving was a lot of fun. My dad and his roomie Katherine (sp?), Nancy's parents, my sister and her family, Mom and Emil all spent Thanksgiving at our place. It was really great. The food was great and there was plenty of room for all of our guests! Christina Renee and Laura even found some time to get up on the slopes while they were in town.

Mom is settling in pretty well. There is still a fair amount of medical- related paperwork that needs to be filed and/or finalized with the state, but even those details are starting to fall into place. She seems to be enjoying her new living arrangements, and certainly is enjoying being able to go to some of Nancy's ice hockey games!

11-06-2001  Whew! For the better part of the last three weeks, I have been busy working on moving my mom here to Boulder. She is pretty much settled at this point, and enjoying the Indian Summer here in Boulder. My buddy, Emil, also moved to Boulder at the same time. Luckily, he accompanied me on the 21 hour drive in the U-haul to Boulder. Without him, I surely would have veered off I-80 asleep somewhere in Wyoming. <-8

09-05-2001  The basement has been completed for a number of months and it's just perfect. We are finally pretty much all settled in to the new house (although we still don't have any pictures on the wall). The new house is just great!

Nancy and I recently took a trip to California. It was really fun. We spent some time in Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, Livermore, and Walnut Creek. We also went to Yosemite and hiked up Half-Dome. That was a really exhausting hike, but it was really fun.

05-24-2001  Well, the basement finishing contractors were again a little optimistic about the completion dates. The basement is pretty much done at this point, though. The shed didn't go in on time, either, but that was just because it was snowing on the day that they planned to install it. Well, we rescheduled for after my trip to the East Coast to help my dad pick up his new boat (which was super fun!), and the shed was built last week. It's great.

So, with any luck, now that the basement is finished, and the shed has been buit, we will be able to finish settling in (finally!) and get all the junk out of the garage, and pull my truck into the garage at long last.

The house is just great, though, and living in Boulder is even more fun and convenient than we anticipated. We were a little short on furniture, until last weekend. We bought a new dining room table (complete with 10 chairs!), a new kitchen table with four chairs, barstools, and a new couch and loveseat set for the living room. Everything looks great! Now we just have to figure out how to pay for it all!

04-19-2001  Jeez. We had no idea what a pain-in-the-butt the moving process was going to be. It took us almost a month to get fully moved out of the old place in Lafayette. What a nightmare. Luckily, the new owners of the old house were very pleased with the cleanliness of the house when we finally turned it over to them, so we got all of our security deposit back from them (it was weird renting our old house from the new owners, while we were looking for the new house).

Anyway, we are still not fully settled into the new house. This is primarily because we are having the basement finished at this time. The contractors are almost done with the work. When they are done, we should be able to move most of the junk that is currently piled up in the garage into the new storage room in the basement. So, that will help to put the finishing touch on the whole moving process. In fact, the basement should be finished on Monday, April 30, when the carpet is to be installed. That Wednesday we are having a shed installed in the back yard. At that point, we really ought to be able to get a handle on all the junk we have!

03-08-2001  Another long time since the last update. It's funny looking back at the last update considering that we just moved into our new house last Monday! We love it. It was a pain selling the old house and finding the new place, but now that we are settled in (relatively speaking) we are really excited.

Unfortunately, there was a hacker break-in at the site that hosts my web pages. So, they have locked down the machines pretty tightly, and I haven't found a convenient way to upload pictures of the new house yet. Believe me, when I figure it out, I'll be putting some pics of the new house up, don't worry about that!

10-30-2000 Well, it's been almost a year since the last update. A lot has happened, of course. Nancy and I were married on July 29. All the wedding information can be found on the wedding pages. Since then, Nancy and I have been looking into moving into Boulder, from Lafayette. It has been interesting, but it is starting to look like the timing might not be right. We are thinking about suspending our search until next Spring.

So, for the time being, we are looking forward to a good ski season (hopefully!), and playing lots of ice hockey. Nancy has joined a new travelling women's ice hockey team called the Brewsers. They are sponsored by the Left Hand Brewery. I am assistant coaching the team. We had our first game this last Saturday. We lost, but the team played very well. Should be a good season!

01-17-2000 Nancy and I have been back from our Millenium Cruise for ten days or so. We have been skiing three times so far at Mary Jane since the cruise. The snow conditions stink for the middle of January, but we have had some fun anyway. We are glad that we didn't miss any good ski days while on the cruise, but are wishing for more snow now. Think snow!

Millennium Cruise

My dad, as a grand gesture to the family, took eight of us on a cruise to the International dateline for the Millennium New Year's celebration. It was a 16 day cruise from Sydney, Australia, to Aukland, New Zealand. We stopped in two ports in Australia: Melbourne and Burnie. Then after cruising through the Fiorlands National Park in New Zealand, we made three stops on the Eastern coast of the South Island: Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington. Then, we cruised to the Chatham Islands and out to the dateline for New Year's Eve (two of them, to be exact). Finally, to finish our cruise, we stopped in three ports on the North Island of New Zealand: Tauranga, Bay of Islands, and ultimately Aukland.
Millennium Sunrise
My aunt Sue, took this wonderful picture of the first sunrise of the new Millennium from our cruiseship parked on the International Dateline. Click on the picture to download the larger version.

The whole trip was marvellous. Here are the updates that we made from CyberCafes while we were on the trip...

01-04-2000 Nancy and I are in Bay of Islands, New Zealand. It's a really pretty town on a bay full of islands (oddly enough). It's the last day of our 16 day cruise; we will be on a plane tomorrow morning in Aukland to return to the US.

12-28-1999 Nancy and I are in Dunedin, New Zealand in the Visitor's Center. Dunedin is a nice town located on the Otago peninsula. Tomorrow we will stop in Christchurch, and the following day we will be in Wellington. Then, we are out to the International Dateline after cruising around the Chatham Islands. The weather has been quite nice so far, with temps in the upper 60s to the lower 80s.

12-24-1999 Nancy and I are in Burnie, Australia on the island state of Tasmania at a CyberCafe. So far, our Millennium cruise has been very fun. We have already visited Sydney and Melbourne. We have three upcoming stops in New Zealand then we head for the International Dateline for two (2) New Year's celebrations!

11-24-1999 Nancy and I went to NorCal for Thanksgiving. It was super fun.

11-11-1999 I finally created The Pack website.

09-13-1999 I finally closed the deal on the purchase of my new car: a 1993 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo. The same day, I put my 1986 Acura Integra up for sale in the newspaper. After 14 years of reliable service, it decided to stop running. It's at the shop right now! Bummer.

09-05-1999 Nancy and I went to Los Angeles for an engagement party hosted by our friends from UCLA. It was super fun!

05-29-1999 I finally filed my Master's thesis at UCLA!

05-04-1999 Both my hockey teams have been eliminated in their respective playoffs. Both teams had very good seasons.

04-22-1999 My ice hockey team, the Pack, defeated the Warthogs in the first round of the playoffs. We meet the Puckheads on Saturday in the second round.

04-14-1999 I am planning a trip to California for Memorial Day weekend. I will be in Southern California for Wednesday evening through Saturday afternoon. Then I will be heading up to Northern California for the remainder of the weekend including Memorial Day. While I am in SoCal, I will be filing my Master's thesis with UCLA.

02-06-1999 My inline hockey team won another championship!

12-28-1998 I had a great Christmas. Nancy, my girlfriend, bought me a great pair of ice hockey gloves. They are super. Also, I racked up a couple of DVDs: The Big Lebowski, Eraser, and A Few Good Men!

12-15-1998 Check out the new Wish List page. Any friends or relatives who are looking to buy me a Christmas present should look here to find out how easy it is to buy a present for me!

12-14-1998 Mario Gerla, another UCLA professor on my Master's thesis committee, has informed me that he is planning to read the thesis in the next couple of days. So, with any luck, he will agree to sign in the next week or so. That would leave just Wesley Chu!

12-08-1998 I just heard from another member of my thesis committee. Professor David Rennels, one of my favorite instructors from UCLA, has agreed to sign the thesis! That's two down and two to go!

12-01-1998 I finally got a computer at home. I also got a high-speed Internet connection. So far, it is working pretty well. My phone line probably doesn't work, but I never use that device anyway.

11-20-1998 I recently switched my research advisor from Gerald Popek to Peter Reiher. Peter is the manager on the FMG research project. He helped me complete my thesis project and assisted me greatly in writing my thesis. He has agreed to sign my thesis! The three other professors that are on my thesis committee are currently reading the thesis. As soon as they decide that they are ready to sign the thesis, I will finally graduate!

I have updated the Wish List page for my upcoming birthday! Don't forget to order early!
