John R. Salomone's Wish List

This page contains list of items that I would like to get. I plan to get all of these items eventually, but until then, they are all great gift ideas. Hint, hint.

DVDs

Anyone who is reading this page probably knows that Nancy and I have had the basement of our house built into a bit of a home theatre. In addition to the high-definition programming that we enjoy from our DirecTV system, we enjoy watching movies on DVD. We have a pretty decent collection of DVDs, but we are still looking to expand our collection.

Fortunately for all of you looking to buy me gifts (there's another one of those hints again), DVDs are really easy to purchase and have shipped over the Internet. So, after the list of DVDs that I would like to get, you will find a list of sites that sell DVDs.

Sounds Formats

There is one more thing to note. There are primarily two competing sound formats that are currently available on DVD: Dolby Digital and DTS. Dolby Digital is a six channel sound format that is available on DVDs. Most DVDs that are sold currently are Dolby Digital encoded. However, a new sound format, called DTS, is becoming available on more and more DVDs. DTS is also a six channel format, but the sound quality is much improved over Dolby Digital. Fortunately, my system is compatible with both formats. The titles that I have listed below with DTS in parenthesis are available with DTS sound. So, I would prefer those versions. The ones that are not marked with DTS in parenthesis are not available to my knowledge in DTS. However, if you find the title to be available in DTS, that is my preference.

Online DVD Retailers

This section contains a list of online DVD retailers.

Image of Ken Crane's

Ken Crane's is an excellent site for ordering DVDs. They have all the currently released titles at 20% off the retail price. They also have the best deal on shipping: $1.50 per order, regardless of how much you purchase. They have really quick turn-around time, too, for you late shoppers! Since Ken Crane's carries LaserDiscs and DVDs, you have to specify which you would like to purchase or browse.

Image of DVD Express

DVD Express is another great site for ordering DVDs online. They also sell all of the currently available titles. But, many of their titles are 30-40% off the retail price. However, their shipping prices are a bit more than Ken Crane's. So, I would recommend looking up titles on both sites and determining which is cheaper considering shipping charges.

Another online video store with some titles greatly discounted. This site has shipping charges that are pretty expensive, but sometimes the titles are so discounted that it is still the best deal.
