William Baldwin was born in May 22, 1838, probably in Tennessee. He died on March 23, 1916 in Campbell County, Tennessee. He was unsure of his birth place but it is listed as Claiborne County, Tennessee. In response to a question on a form asking for his place of birth, he replied "Don't know. Some say Cumberland Gap, some say Ohio". His surname in some of the pension papers, including his signature, is spelled as Balden. William F. Baldwin

He enrolled at Camp Robinson, KY on the 20th day of September 1861 as a private in Company "C" 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Honorably discharged at Nashville on the 19th day of September, 1864. His height is listed as six feet with fair complexion blue eyes and light hair. His occupation is listed as a farmer. Places of residence listed as Claiborne and Campbell Counties. Post Office address on May 22, 1898 was Wellspring,, Campbell County. William Baldwin was married to Martha C. Dunn.

Personally came before me, a___ Justice of the Peace____ in and for aforesaid County and State, ___William Baldwin claimant aged 46 years_____ persons of lawful age, who being duly sworn declare in relation to aforesaid case, as follows:

I am not able gow before any of my Docktors owing to my helth at this time. I am so badly affleked at this time with Rheumetism and Piles. I am suffering vary mutch at this time. Not able a grate many mornings to dress my self. Scarcely able to ride a horse back any day. To Docktor Davidson at the mouth is about 150 miles and all the way threw the mountains no public conveyance it would be nexto imposable for me to make the trip and my fynantiel conditon is sutch that i have not the means to gow on to give my self and family justice. In the matter of the Pension Claim of William Baldwin, Invalid pension No 351144 Personally came before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County and State John Hix Age 57 years P.O. Address Wellspring, Tennessee & William C. Mc ____ Age 40 years of P.O. Address is Speedwell, Tennessee persons of lawful age, who being duly sworn, declare in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: We John Hix and William C. Mc_____ who being well acquainted with said claimant William Balden late of Company C. 1st Tennessee infantry & served with him in the same company three years. We know he contracted Rheumatism while we was in camp at Cumberland Ford, Ky in the year 1862. We think it was some time in March. He was sent the hospital and treated there for rheumatism some time. He was returned for duty some time in July 1862. He then was struck down with rheumatism again (in) Murfreesboro, Tennessee some time in January 1863 and was very low. He was also ( ) treated in the hospital there some time.

His next sickness was while we was in Georgia some time in July 1864. He was taken very violent with pains all over. Then took Diarrhea and was very low form that time until we was sent back to Nashville, Tenn., to be mustered out. He was not able to walk alone a great deal of his time. He was treated by the docktor from July 1864 up to the 17th of September 1864. The docktors said he had piles Diarehea & rheumatism. We have been well acquainted with him ever since his discharge. He has been vary poorly every since not able to make his living by manual labor

In the matter of pension claim No. 066405 of Martha Balden widow of Wm. Balden Late of Co. C 1st Tenn infin Civil war personally appeared before me Wm Rouch, a notary public of said county duly authorized to administer oaths, Mrs. Ellen Ellison, aged 60 years whose post office address is Speedwell Tenn R #2 after being by me duly sworn before as follows. I am personally acquainted with the claimant also her husband the soldier have known them from childhood. I was present at my fathers home and saw them married about the year, I cannot give the exact date, the were united in marriage by Rev Wm. Williams now dead. Affiant further states that her knowledge of above facts was gained by being sister to the claimant and of being raised up in same community with the soldier and being present at their marriage. Affiant further stated that she has lived in same neighborhood or near the Claim(ant) and her husband during all the years from childhood to the date of the death of the soldier and know that they was never married to any other person and that they lived and cohabited together as husband and wife to the date of the death of said soldier and that the claimant has not remarried since the death of the soldier.
