From time to time, new taxa are added to the various checklists maintained on this site.  Below is a quick summary of recent additions or corrections/updates; newest records at top.

Florida Chironomidae

Removed Orthocladiinae genus E; this is most likely a Metriconemus.

Belatedly added Polypedilum sp. FL to Florida checklist.  This was called "P. bergi" in the key, but may not be that species.  Associated material is needed!

Labrundinia longipalpus (Goetghebuer) listed as senior synonym for L. maculata Roback.  See Da Silva, F.L., A.A. Fonseca-Gessner & T. Ekrem. 2011. Revision of Labrundinia maculata Roback, 1971, a new junior synonym of L. longipalpis (Goetghebuer, 1921) (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae). Aquatic Insects 33: 293-303.

Cladotanytarsus latissimus Gilka and C. subletteorum Gilka added. Both species are known as adults and pupae only and are members of the subgenus C. (Lenziella). To date, both are known only from Florida.  See: Gilka, W. 2011. Six unusual Cladotanytarsus Kieffer: towards a systematics of the genus and resurrection of Lenziella Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanytarsini). Zootaxa 3100: 1-34.  I added these two species to the checklist last year but I neglected to add them to this page.

"Stempellina sp. C" is Neostempellina reissi.  This was changed some time ago on the Florida checklist but I negelected to mention it here!!

Pseudosmittia dolobrata Ferrington & Sæther added.  Described from Gadsden County; known only as adult male.  See Ferrington, L.C., Jr. & O.A. Sæther. 2011.  A revision of the genera Pseudosmittia Edwards, 1932, Allocladius Kieffer, 1913, and Hydrosmittia gen. n. (Diptera: Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae). Zootaxa 2849: 1-314.

Sublettea status in Florida changed from probable to certain based on specimens from Gadsden Co.  Species level identification uncertain; adults needed!  Thanks to Todd Risk (FDEP) for this record.

Phaenopsectra punctipes (Wiedemann) added, based on the distinctive larva (not illustrated in my 2001 manual).  Larva has a very deep, rounded notch (diastema) on the mandible, mentum steeply descending laterally, 3 plates of pecten epipharyngis densely adorned with numerous small teeth (appears spiny like a hedgehog) and strong, well defined line between frontal apotome and sclerite anterior to it.  In Florida known from northern tier of counties.

Asheum has been re-established as a genus, with the sole SE US species A. beckae (Sublette).  This was done in a brief statement on page 6 of  Oyewo, E.A. and O.A Sæther. 2008. Revision of Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) Kieffer and Ainuyusurika Sasa et Shirasaki (Diptera: Chironomidae). Zootaxa 1953: 1-145.

    Parentheses removed from author name for Celina grossula - should be Celina grossula LeConte.  I had followed an error in Young (1979) by placing "LeConte" in parentheses. Because LeConte originally described the species grossula in the genus Celina, there are no parentheses around his name.

    Celina slossonae changed back to its original spelling - call it Celina slossoni  ... again.  Note that even though Mutchler misspelled it as "slossoni" (which is incorrect; because the species was named for a woman, it should have been "slossonae"), Article 33.4 of the ICZN states that such a change is to be termed an "incorrect subsequent spelling".
