From time to time, new taxa are added to the various checklists maintained on this site.  Below is a quick summary of recent additions or corrections/updates; newest records at top.

(last update 8 September 2015)

Florida Chironomidae

Paramerina is now considered a subgenus of Zavrelimyia.  See:  Silva, F.L. da & Ekrem, T.  2015.  Phylogenetic relationships of nonbiting midges in the subfamily Tanypodinae (Diptera: Chironomidae) inferred from morphology.  Systematic Entomology. DOI: 10.1111/syen.12141; pp. 1-20.

Lipurometriocnemus glabalus Sæther added.  This is a new genus and species for Florida, collected at my house in Wakulla County.

Micropsectra sp. F Epler added.
Pontomyia natans Edwards added.
Stempellina cf. subglabripennis (Brundin) added (was S. sp. D Epler).
Tanytarsus hastatus Sublette & Sasa added (was T. sp. Epler, T. sp. Q Epler)
T. sp. H Epler and T. sp. I Epler added (duh ... how did I manage to not have these listed before??)
T. sp. alpha Epler, T. sp. beta Epler, T. sp. delta Epler, T. sp. gamma Epler, T. sp. epsilon Epler added.

Parachironomus sp. D Epler belatedly added.  This taxon will key to couplet 7 in Epler (2001) but has a smooth outer border to the mentum, has no recurved striae on the ventromental plate and the anterior border of the plate is smooth.  Todd Risk of FDEP and Bob Rutter have also found this taxon.

Tanytarsus sp. Y changed to T. messersmithi.  Have your material verified before you change any names!!

Tanytarsus sp. Q deleted (same as T. sp. E)

Tanytarsus sp. Z added based on material from Escambia County (courtesy of Todd Risk and Mike Heyn, FDEP Tallahassee).
3-i-2014, updated 4-vi-2014 to correct error with T. sp. Q

Tanytarsus allicis Sublette added.  Status of T. pelsuei changed to "probable"; Florida specimens previously identified as this species by J.E. Sublette do not appear to be T. pelsuei but are apparently an undescribed species very similar to it and T. dendyi.

Status of Tanytarsus sepp changed from probable to certain; Tanytarsus sp. A removed because in most cases this is T. seppHOWEVER, do not automatically assume "your" T. sp. A is T. sepp unless you have associated material.  There are other taxa out there masquerading as T. sp. A; you'll just have to wait until my new Tanytarsini key for Florida is completed (by summer of 2014).

Added Stempellina sp. D from Econfina Creek in Panhandle.  Somewhat similar to my S. sp. B (not known from FL), but pedicels for frontoclypeal setae much longer.

Updated taxonomy of Cryptochironomus stylifera (Johannsen), previously confused with C. psittacinus (Meigen) by Townes

Bethbilbeckia floridensis to Macropelopia

Einfeldia brunneipennis
and E. natchitocheae to Chironomus

Glyptotendipes chelonia
(Townes) replaces G. amplus Townes

Removed Orthocladiinae genus E; this is most likely a Metriocnemus.

Added Corynoneura floridaensis Fu & Sæther (was my C. sp. B) and Corynoneura capitanea Fu & Sæther (larva unknown).

Belatedly added Polypedilum sp. FL to Florida checklist.  This was called "P. bergi" in the key, but may not be that species.  Associated material is needed!

Labrundinia longipalpus (Goetghebuer) listed as senior synonym for L. maculata Roback.  See Da Silva, F.L., A.A. Fonseca-Gessner & T. Ekrem. 2011. Revision of Labrundinia maculata Roback, 1971, a new junior synonym of L. longipalpis (Goetghebuer, 1921) (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae). Aquatic Insects 33: 293-303.

Cladotanytarsus latissimus Giłka and C. subletteorum Giłka added. Both species are known as adults and pupae only and are members of the subgenus C. (Lenziella). To date, both are known only from Florida.  See: Giłka, W. 2011. Six unusual Cladotanytarsus Kieffer: towards a systematics of the genus and resurrection of Lenziella Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanytarsini). Zootaxa 3100: 1-34.  I added these two species to the checklist last year but I neglected to add them to this page.

"Stempellina sp. C" is Neostempellina reissi.  This was changed some time ago on the Florida checklist but I neglected to mention it here!!

Pseudosmittia dolobrata Ferrington & Sæther added.  Described from Gadsden County; known only as adult male.  See Ferrington, L.C., Jr. & O.A. Sæther. 2011.  A revision of the genera Pseudosmittia Edwards, 1932, Allocladius Kieffer, 1913, and Hydrosmittia gen. n. (Diptera: Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae). Zootaxa 2849: 1-314.

Sublettea status in Florida changed from probable to certain based on specimens from Gadsden Co.  Species level identification uncertain; adults needed!  Thanks to Todd Risk (FDEP) for this record.

Saetheria sp. 1 added (Leon Co.: Panther Creek).  Thanks to Laura Line (WAR) for sending the specimen for verification.

Phaenopsectra punctipes (Wiedemann) added, based on the distinctive larva (not illustrated in my 2001 manual).  Larva has a very deep, rounded notch (diastema) on the mandible, mentum steeply descending laterally, 3 plates of pecten epipharyngis densely adorned with numerous small teeth (appears spiny like a hedgehog) and strong, well defined line between frontal apotome and sclerite anterior to it.  In Florida known from northern tier of counties.

Stilocladius clinopecten Sæther added; known from Wolf Creek, Walton Co.

Tanytarsus sp. W Epler deleted; the "type" was a damaged Paratanytarsus longistilus!

Revision of Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) Kieffer and Ainuyusurika Sasa et Shirasaki (Diptera: Chironomidae). Zootaxa 1953: 1-145.

Chironomus columbiensis Wülker, Sublette, Morath & Martin belatedly added

Zavrelia aristata Ekrem & Stur added

Florida water beetles

Laccomimus Toledo & Michat replaces Laccodytes Régimbart.  See Toledo, M. & Michat, M. 2015. Description of Laccomimus gen. n. and eleven new species from the Neotropical region (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Laccophilinae). Zootaxa 3990: 301-354.

Parentheses removed from author name for Celina grossula - should be Celina grossula LeConte.  I had followed an error in Young (1979) by placing "LeConte" in parentheses. Because LeConte originally described the species grossula in the genus Celina, there are no parentheses around his name.

Celina slossonae changed back to its original spelling - call it Celina slossoni  ... again.  Note that even though Mutchler misspelled it as "slossoni" (which is incorrect; because the species was named for a woman, it should have been "slossonae"), Article 33.4 of the ICZN states that such a change is to be termed an "incorrect subsequent spelling".

    Neoporus floridanus moved to Hydroporus
    Uvarus sp. 1 added

changed Eretes sticticus (L.) to E. explicitus Miller, based on my re-examination and dissection of Young's material

Ilybius incarinatus Zimmermann added [Wakulla Co.]

Prodaticus added, includes P. bimarginatus and P. rimosus.  The two included species were formerly placed in the subgenus H. (Guignotites); this is a junior synonym of Prodaticus, which has been elevated to full genus status.  See: Miller, K.B., Bergsten, J. & M.F. Whiting. 2009. Phylogeny and classification of the tribe Hydaticini (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae): partition choice for Bayesian analysis with multiple nuclear and mitochondrial protein-coding genes. Zoologica Scripta 38: 591-615.

Matus bicarinatus (Say) [Blackwater River and Escambia River, Santa Rosa Co., leg. Dana Denson & Andy Rasmussen]

Dytiscus carolinus Aubé [Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve, leg. D. Almquist, Florida Natural Areas Inventory]

Hydroporus pseudoniger  Nilsson & Fery [nom. nov. for ruficeps Aubé]

    Acilius confusus Bergsten
Derovatellus floridanus Fall [reinstated as full species]

Stenelmis mera Sanderson [Brushy Creek, McDavid Creek, Pine Barren Creek, Escambia Co., leg.
Andy Rasmussen & Dana Denson]
    S. morsei White [Brushy Creek, Escambia Co. leg. Andy Rasmussen and Dana Denson]

    Oulimnius nitidulus (LeConte)

    Spanglerogyrus albiventris Folkerts

    Gyrinus marginellus Fall

Removed Peltodytes pedunculatus pending examination of specimen

added Peltodytes pedunculatus to Florida fauna [fide Nilsson & Vondel 2005. World Catalogue of Insects. Vol 7.]

Anacaena suturalis (LeConte) changed to Crenitulus
suturalis (LeConte).  For more details, download this addendum.

Changed Phaenonotum minor to P. minus (gender concordance)

Changed record for Laccobius minutoides to L. reflexipenis.

added Cercyon crocatus Smetana [I missed the FL record for this taxon previously]
Laccobius minutoides d'Orchymont [a new genus and species record for FL; Big Escambia Creek, Escambia Co., leg. Andy Rasmussen & Dana Denson]

The previous (31-v-2008) record for Cercyon mendax Smetana [Arbuckle Creek, Highlands Co., leg. Dana & Edie Denson] is incorrect; this record refers to C. floridanus Horn.  The species is still recorded for Florida in Hansen, M. 1999. World Catalogue of Insects, Volume 2, Hydrophiloidea (s. str.) (Coleoptera). Apollo Books, 416 pp.

All species of Cyphon from Florida are now placed in Contacyphon.  See Zwick, P., Klausnitzer, B. & Ruta, R. 2013.  Contacyphon Gozis, 1886 removed from synonymy (Coleoptera: Scirtidae) to accomodate species so far combined with the invalid name, Cyphon Paykull, 1799.  Entomologische Blätter und Coleoptera 109: 337-353.  Note also that species from the "Cyphon collaris complex" (none known to date from Florida) are now placed in the genus Nyholmia.  See Klausnitzer, B. 2013.  Monophyletische Artengruppe der ehemaligen Gattung Cyphon Paykull, 1799 und Beschreibung von neuen Gattungen (Coleoptera, Scirtidae).  Entomologische Nachrichten und Berichte 57: 255-262.

Ora discoidea Champion added to Florida list

corrected species list in regards to Cyphon padi, which is NOT Nearctic; record from Peck & Thomas (1998) for C. padi (L.) probably refers to C. neopadi Klausnitzer, 1976.

replaced Scirtes sp. 1 with Scirtes goliai Epler

added Scirtes oblongus Guérin-Méneville [new species for Florida, USA and Nearctic]. Removed Scirtes sp. 2

added Cyphon spp. 3, 4, 5.  Added Sarabandus robustus to Florida fauna [Paynes Prairie, Gainesville]. Changed Elodes pulchella to Sacodes pulchella.

added Sacodes thoracica (Guérin-Méneville) as a taxon that might occur in Florida

Florida water bugs

Hesperocorixa obliqua (Hungerford) [Pine Barren Creek, Escambia Co.]
Sigara mississippiensis Hungerford [Pine Barren Creek, Escambia Co.]

Trichocorixa macroceps (Kirkaldy) [Manning Creek, Santa Rosa Co.]

Ochterus americanus (Uhler) added, based on male specimen collected from Sweetwater Creek in Liberty County
